CHILE
Torres Del Paine Signature Ride
Overview
This is a real journey through Patagonia, riding around 140km from the remote Sierra Baguales into Torres del Paine National Park over five days.
Your guide is Osvaldo, a Chilean gaucho who was born and raised in Puerto Natales and has spent more than 20 years riding and working in this area. He knows this part of Patagonia incredibly well – the horses, the mountains, the weather and the trails – and you'll be travelling through his home country rather than simply following a tourist route.
The horses are tough Patagonian Criollos, bred for this terrain. You'll ride the same horse throughout the journey, travelling through open valleys and pampas, crossing rivers and climbing into the mountains. There are plenty of long stretches at walk where the ground dictates, but once the country opens up the pace picks up with some good trots and canters.
There are some decent days in the saddle too. Most are around five to six hours, with the longest covering approximately 42km, so this is definitely a ride for experienced, riding-fit riders who enjoy being out for the day rather than counting the hours.
Accommodation is much more comfortable than you might expect for such a remote trail. You'll spend two nights glamping in Sierra Baguales, a night at a traditional estancia and the remaining nights in comfortable lodges as you make your way into Torres del Paine. Your luggage travels separately by vehicle, so you don't need to carry everything with you.
There's plenty that makes the week feel very Patagonian too – eating a traditional lamb asado at the estancia, riding beneath the Torres del Paine mountains and finishing the final riding day at Grey Lake, where you'll swap your horse for a boat and head out towards Grey Glacier.
For us, the appeal of this ride is the journey itself. You start out in the much quieter Sierra Baguales and over the course of the week actually ride your way into Torres del Paine. Add in Osvaldo, his Criollo horses and a group of just a handful of riders, and it feels like a very special way to see Patagonia.
Our Recommendations
You're travelling a long way to reach Patagonia, so if you have the time we'd definitely recommend adding a night or two either side of the ride.
Puerto Natales is well worth an extra night rather than simply passing through. It's a small, easy-going town on the Última Esperanza Sound, surrounded by mountains, and has some surprisingly good restaurants. Have a wander along the waterfront, enjoy some fresh seafood and a glass of Chilean wine and give yourself a day to recover from the journey before meeting the horses.
If you have an extra day, visit the Mylodon Cave Natural Monument, around 30 minutes from Puerto Natales. The caves are where remains of the enormous prehistoric Mylodon – a giant ground sloth – were discovered in the late 1800s.
Another excellent day trip from Puerto Natales is a boat trip through the Última Esperanza Fjord to the Balmaceda and Serrano Glaciers. You'll see a completely different side of Patagonia from the water and it's a good addition to the Grey Glacier trip already included in the ride.
And if you're making a bigger holiday of it, why not add a second ride in Argentina? Sapucai, Los Potreros and Estancia Don Joaquin can all be combined with Patagonia, each offering a completely different riding experience and another side of Argentina.

Riding & Itinerary
The horses are Patagonian Criollos, bred and raised for this country. They tend to be around 14–15hh. Compact, strong, tough and very sure-footed over the rocky and mountainous terrain.
They are forward-going horses with plenty of energy when asked, but importantly they know how to look after themselves and their riders when the ground becomes more challenging.
You'll be matched with one horse and ride the same horse throughout the five-day journey.
Day 1
Arrival & Journey to Sierra Baguales · Baguales Glamping
Guests are collected around 10:00 AM in Puerto Natales and drive across the steppe, with a stop in the village of Cerro Castillo and lunch at Estancia Cerro Guido, before continuing to the remote Sierra Baguales. We arrive at Baguales Glamping to settle in for the first two nights.
Riding: Transfer day
Overnight: Baguales Glamping
Day 2
First Ride in Sierra Baguales · Baguales Glamping
A short UTV transfer takes us to the horses. After saddling up and adjusting the tack, this first riding day lets riders find their horse and the rhythm of the journey, through the valleys and rolling terrain of Baguales, returning to camp by afternoon.
Riding: 5 hours - 20 km
Overnight: Baguales Glamping
Day 3
Ride to the Las Chinas Valley · Estancia Las Chinas
Leaving Baguales on horseback, the ride climbs into higher mountain terrain — reaching the week's high point at around 1,300 metres, with wide views across the valleys. Lunch on the route, then the descent into the remote Las Chinas Valley, where a traditional asado al palo awaits at the estancia.
Riding: 5 hours - 25 km
Overnight: Estancia Las Chinas
Day 4
Ride to Laguna Azul & Laguna Amarga · Hostería Pehoé
The longest day of the journey. From Estancia Las Chinas the route follows the open Las Chinas Valley toward Torres del Paine, reaching Laguna Azul around midday for lunch with clear views of the Torres. The afternoon continues to the Laguna Amarga sector, where the horses spend the night; a transfer takes us to Hostería Pehoé.
Riding: 6 hours - 42 km
Overnight: Hostería Pehoé
Day 5
Ride Across Torres del Paine National Park · Pampa Lodge
A short transfer returns us to Laguna Amarga and the horses. From here the ride crosses the National Park toward the Administration sector, following remote trails with changing views of the Paine Massif. Lunch along the route; after several hours in the saddle the horses stay near the Administration sector, and a transfer takes us to Pampa Lodge.
Riding: 6 hours - 35 km
Overnight: Pampa Lodge
Day 6
Ride to Grey Lake & Glacier Navigation · Pampa Lodge
A short transfer, then around two and a half hours riding toward Grey Lake, over open terrain with wide views of the Massif. We leave the horses and continue to Hotel Grey for lunch, then board the boat for a navigation across Grey Lake — among floating icebergs, toward the face of Grey Glacier — before returning to Pampa Lodge for the final evening.
Riding: 2.5 hours - 18 km
Overnight: Pampa Lodge
Day 7
Return to Puerto Natales
We depart the lodge and drive back to Puerto Natales — about an hour and a half, along the Serrano area with views of rivers, lakes and forest. Arrival is expected around midday, with drop-off at the airport or hotel depending on each guest's travel plans.
Riding: Return transfer
Ends: Puerto Natales, midday

Accommodation & Meals
We really like the mix of accommodation on this ride. You're travelling from the remote Sierra Baguales right into Torres del Paine, and where you stay changes along the way too.
Baguales Glamping, Sierra Baguales
The adventure starts with two nights glamping in the remote Sierra Baguales. It's a lovely place to settle into Patagonia, surrounded by mountains and open country and well away from the busier parts of Torres del Paine.
Estancia Las Chinas, Las Chinas Valley
After riding across the high mountain pass, you'll spend the night at a traditional Patagonian estancia in the Las Chinas Valley. This should be a really special evening, with a traditional lamb asado al palo, slowly cooked beside an open fire.
Hostería Pehoé, Torres del Paine
After the longest riding day of the week, you'll definitely appreciate a comfortable night at Hostería Pehoé, right inside Torres del Paine National Park.
Pampa Lodge, Torres del Paine
Your final two nights are at Pampa Lodge as the journey continues across the National Park towards Grey Lake. A comfortable base for the end of the trip and your visit to Grey Glacier.
And importantly, you don't have to pack light enough to carry everything on your horse! Your main luggage travels between each overnight stop by vehicle while you ride.
All breakfasts, lunches and dinners are included, with plenty of good, hearty food after long days in the saddle.
Expect local meat, chicken and fish along with fresh salads and vegetables. On riding days, lunches are generally picnics taken out on the trail – there aren't many better places for a lunch stop!

The Destination
Patagonia is one of those places that really does feel made for exploring on a horse. This ride is in the far south of Chile, starting in the quieter Sierra Baguales before making its way into Torres del Paine National Park. It's big, open country – rolling steppe and wide valleys giving way to rivers, mountain passes, lakes and the instantly recognisable peaks of Torres del Paine.
It's also a landscape where you feel properly away from everything. The route covers around 140km, so rather than seeing Patagonia from a vehicle or stopping at the usual viewpoints, you're actually travelling through it over several days, finishing at Grey Lake and the huge Grey Glacier.
And do come prepared for Patagonian weather – even in the summer months it can change very quickly, and the wind is all part of the experience!
