Estancia Don Joaquin is a complete gem in our collection. It’s an authentic working cattle estancia set in Esquina, Southwest Corrientes Province, 6 hours north of Buenos Aires. The Corrientes region of Argentina is the 2nd largest wetland area in South America making for great footing, wide open spaces for splashy canters and fabulous wildlife and birds. Your hosts Angie, Diego, their daughter Josefina and their team of exceptional gauchos opened the doors of their stunning and unique estancia to guests 15 years ago and it is truly a privilege to experience traditional country life on this estancia… The riding, wildlife, the food and gaucho culture.

Every day at Don Joaquin is different and guests receive a tailor made programme to suit, which may include exploring the countryside on horseback, bird watching, fishing in the River Corrientes, learning some Argentinean gaucho skills or cooking with Angie. On occasion there may be a rodeo locally your hosts would bring you to, or even a trip to the local town is a delight with beautiful artisan local shopping.
For those who simply want to chill out and enjoy the countryside there are plenty of places to relax including a lovely pool and of course you can indulge in the delicious home-made food and fine Argentinean wines.

Transfers
After your international flight to Buenos Aires, you have an option of private car transfer to Esquina or an overnight coach, which we recommend.
From Buenos Aires, it takes 8 hours on a luxury coach with a seat that reclines fully flat. The bus costs $240 for a return trip.
This is a comfortable way of traveling overnight. It takes you right into Esquina, the nearest town from where you’ll receive a complimentary transfer to the ranch.
We can also organise a private transfer if you prefer, just ask.

Riding & Itinerary
The estancia stays don't follow a set itinerary but the activities and riding vary depending on the time of your visit and what ranch work needs to be done. Some days you may follow the gauchos and participate in their daily activities like herding cattle, other days if there's no ranch work that guests can participate in, you may have more leisurely trail rides. The below is an example to give you a flavour of what to expect during a week stay.
Day 1
If you take the overnight coach from Buenos Aires, you'll be arriving in Esquina around 4am. The gauchos will be already expecting you at the bus station and drive you to the estancia. They will show you to your room where you can have few more hours sleep and refresh before breakfast. We will have our first ride with the gauchos in the morning getting used to the tack, horses and style of riding here. Please note that you'll be assigned 2 horses that will be yours for the week, you will try a number of horses until you're happy with your match. There are 100 horses to choose from and we can guarantee to find your perfect partner based on your riding ability blended with the horse’s personality and spirit. In the afternoon, we are having a traditional asado for lunch. Siesta by the pool and another trail ride before dinner.
Day 2
Breakfast. We will spend this morning working with the gauchos, rounding up and moving cattle into a corral for a count and health check. If there are young calves, the gauchos may also vaccinate and brand them, which is required by law in Argentina. We will choose the activity according to the daily gaucho schedule but whatever we end up doing, we promise the days you work with gauchos will be your favourite memories from your stay. It's incredible to watch them at work, so skilled yet humble about it. The gaucho traditions live strong here at the estancia and you will learn a lot from the gauchos.
Lunch at the estancia. In the afternoon we will go riding out on tracks where you will be able to see herds of horses and sheep. Immense lagoons with reservoirs will welcome you and if lucky, you will see some of the native wildlife, otters, tortoises, capybaras (big local rodents), yacarés (local alligators), herons, flamingos, storks, and dozens of bird varieties. We will be back at the estancia at dusk. Cool drinks wait for us in one of the dining areas. Dinner.
Day 3
Breakfast. Today we are ready to do a longer trail ride across the plains and lagoons promising lots of splashy canters and fun. You might see the herd of cattle you rounded up the previous day grazing by one of the lagoons on your way out, and the further you go, the more chances you get to spot local wildlife.
Lunch back at the estancia. Siesta by the pool.
In the evening, you might go swimming with horses in one of the lagoons or if the moonlight is bright, you may do a nocturnal trail ride riding across the fields and enjoy the sounds of night under the Correntinean wide skies. Dinner.
Day 4
Breakfast. We’ll ride to the natural Correntinean scrubland. This ride allows the view of the diverse tree species and bushes of the litoral region, along with the 250 bird species. At times, the paths between the narrow flora cover branches to become arches or tunnels. Lunch at the estancia. This afternoon we will learn gaucho skills lassoing. Wine tasting. Dinner.
Day 5
Early sunrise ride with beautiful views across the fields and lagoons, which are even more stunning in the early morning light. You will pass by herds of horses and cattle and just take in the serene morning atmosphere. After breakfast, we might head to Esquina town for some shopping. Here you can find some bombachas (gaucho trousers) and shirts to dress like a local. Bombachas are really practical also on your future safaris and worn by many guides in Africa. Return to the estancia. Lunch. Siesta. In the afternoon we might play gaucho polo or gaucho games on the lawn. So much fun and another highlight! Drinks watching the gauchos drive horses to their night pasture and sun setting behind the estancia. Dinner.
Day 6
After breakfast we have another morning working with gauchos. This time we will go round up a herd of horses who've been on holiday on one of the pastures and bring them back to the estancia. All the horses work on rotation having several days, or even weeks of holiday time to time. This ensures you're always riding a horse who's willing and forward, happy to return to work. Lunch. Siesta. Perhaps we play some more gaucho games in the afternoon or learn to cook empanadas with Angie. Drinks and dinner.
Day 7
This is our second last day and we chat about what days you have enjoyed the most and we try and offer you your favourite highlights, perhaps some morning work with the gauchos and swimming with the horses in the afternoon and sunset drinks by the lagoon. Dinner back at the estancia.
Day 8
After a hearty breakfast we cattle drive with the gauchos. Asado at the estancia. Siesta and one last sunset ride and splashy canters across the wetlands and lagoons. Farewell dinner and transfer back to the Esquina bus station ready for your 11pm overnight bus back to Buenos Aires.

This original horseshoe estancia, has been beautifully renovated and stylishly designed by Angie and Diego to include modern comforts in keeping with the traditional elegance can take up to about 24 guests at one time. They have a mix of 15 rooms, Standard, Junior, Master and Luxury, all with ensuite. Each room is individually decorated and each named after an Argentine bird. The rooms also feature large windows that take in the beautiful views out to the garden, fields and wetlands.
In addition, there is lots of communal space, two living rooms, three dining rooms, a playroom for children, a pool house for barbecues, a bar and a swimming pool.
The food is delicious, all homemade using organic produce from local farmers.
A typical breakfast includes freshly baked bread, cereals and toasts, homemade jams and butter, scrambled eggs, cakes, coffee, tea, orange juice and fresh fruit.
Mid-morning after riding, there are appetizers such as olives, cheese, salami washed down with the offer of a beer or a glass of Malbec wine.
At lunch time, the BBQ is often fired up and there is lots of different meat cooked along with grilled vegetables and salads.
Late afternoon, there’s time for a sundowner of local wines, gaucho bread (a grilled bread) and chipá (small bread with cheese) and variety of tea or coffee and cakes.
And if you can make it to dinner, expect something of a European dish with and Argentinean twist. All dinners are 3-course and accompanied with delicious wine.
What’s lovely here is that the kitchen is open to guests all the time and you are invited to watch and learn about the local cuisine, enjoying tastings as the cook prepares dishes! Your hosts also regularly provide spontaneous empanada cooking classes.
