Sapucai Andes Retreat
Overview
Sapucai is a special mountain cabin retreat that sits at the foot of the Andes range beside the clear flowing Chubut river. It’s home to Dominic and Tammy Robaina, who live off grid with their beautiful herd of Criollo horses. They welcome you into their home and offer you the chance to escape from civilisation, to chill out and take part in their estancia's every day life. It’s a small intimate, authentic retreat where at most they have 8 people staying at any one time.
Dominic is laid back and informative about the area and a true horseman. Tammy is this small bundle of joy, always laughing and happy to run to your assistance at any moment. This creates a great vibe in their rustic homestead, and their gaucho hands are equally as friendly and helpful.
Day to day there are lots of outdoor activities like walking, fishing for trout and swimming in the river but the main focus is riding out up into the Alto Chubut mountains. Tthis is glorious and varied riding, trekking out on the vast Patagonian steppe, scrambling up and down steep mountain sides, crossing rivers and riding through beautiful beech forests. Depending on your riding level, there may be the opportunity to explore the highest glacier lake, clear ice blue and so high up in the range that the 9-hour round trip day expedition to see it feels worthwhile.
This is the ideal retreat if you want to completely disconnect from the world and immerse yourself in simple estancia life. You can either stay here for a few days, if you are travelling around Argentina and would like to experience different regions or a complete destination to concentrate on riding and relaxation.

Riding & Itinerary
Day 1
You will be picked up in the morning in Bariloche and take the National Route 40 by car to Villa del Bolsón (120 km). Stop and tour of the place.
We continue to Villa del Maitén – already in the Chubut province – to enjoy lunch and discover the mythical town of La Trochita. We will arrive at the Refuge in the afternoon, time to enjoy a welcome cup of tea or coffee and some freshly baked cake. Settle in, a walk round the property, perhaps a swim in the river. Some red wine in the kitchen and dinner, eating local food.
Day 2 - 3
A typical Andean breakfast, eggs, fresh roll, cheese, jams and ham.
Each day you can choose what you would like to do, morning and afternoon rides, day long rides with picnics or simply relax, have a walk, read a book, fish or swim in the river. Asado dinner of goat or lamb, perhaps fresh trout, potatoes, salads and wine.
Day 4
Breakfast and return to Bariloche.
Jill's thoughts from her trip here: "I loved the riding and my Criollo horse. She was compact, very beautiful and so very powerful. The mountain sides we climbed were insane and she moved up and down them like a nimble goat. I felt very safe to let her take the paths she thought best. While we were there, we experienced riding over the vast Patagonian steppe, through beautiful beech forests, crossed rivers and the highlight was this incredible high mountain climb to see a beautiful glacier lake. It took us 9 hours, with a few times having to get off to let the horses scramble up and down steep parts of the route. It truly felt like an adventure that day, to get so high up on a horse felt amazing."

Accommodation & Meals
El Sapucai mountain refuge is located on the banks of the Chubut River, an isolated area in the foothills. The house has a warm kitchen-dining room where delicious meals are prepared with firewood. There are two bedrooms for two people each, a complete bathroom with a wood heater and a living room with a fireplace. Everything is set to make this place a unique experience. Outside, a small stream separates the house from the 2 yurts, located in front of the Chubut River. You can either stay in the Homestead itself or in the yurts.
The Homestead is small but perfect in every way to give a very comfortable stay. There are 2 twin rooms for guests, a kitchen with wood burning stove and a lounge with a wood burning stove. In fact there is no electric, no WIFI – you will need to bring back up chargers for your mobile phone if you want to take pictures and a torch. There is a satellite phone should there be any emergencies. Its position is central to the estancia, with an asada pit outside beside a babbling brook. It really is very idyllic for those craving a return to a simple way of life.
The 2 yurts are large taking up to 3 people each, with a wood burning stove and a deck to sit out on and admire the views. There is one central shower room shared between the whole property, it is large and kept very clean. On our stay we were very happy to take a bath in the river.
All the meat and vegetables are organically grown and sourced from local farms. You can expect breakfasts that include freshly baked breads, freshly laid eggs, cheeses and ham. Lunches are picnic style out riding and dinners are often fresh trout or an asado with lamb or goat, potatoes and fresh salad, washed down with some local red wine.
