PORTUGAL
Quinta do Falcão Golegã Fair & Classical Dressage
Overview
Every November, the small town of Golegã, known as the “Capital of the Horse”, becomes the epicentre of Lusitano horse culture during the legendary Golegã National Horse Fair. This centuries-old event, which dates back to the 1700s, draws riders, breeders, and horse lovers from across Portugal and beyond.
The streets and central arena come alive with an incredible display of Lusitano stallions and mares, traditional riding outfits, and ornate carriages. From early morning to late night, there is a full programme of equestrian competitions, breed showcases, working equitation, classical dressage displays, and traditional Portuguese riding demonstrations. Many riders parade their horses through the town streets in traditional costume, and the fair offers the unique chance to see these magnificent horses up close — often just a few feet away as they pass through the historic cobbled square.
Beyond the horses, Golegã pulses with Portuguese culture. Evenings are filled with Fado music, the rhythmic stomping of the Fandango, and live regional folklore performances. Local taverns and wine bars overflow with visitors enjoying Abafado and Água Pé, while stalls sell everything from riding boots to local cheeses and handmade saddlery.
Enhance the experience with Classical Dressage lessons at Quinta do Falcão, daily guided trips to the fair, evening entertainment and a chance to ride through the town of Golegã.
Quinta do Falcão offers a truly special horse riding holiday in the heart of Portugal, where the focus is on classical dressage, traditional Portuguese equitation, and the unique bond between horse and rider. Set just outside the historic town of Tomar in the Ribatejo region, this charming family-run estate is a peaceful haven where guests are welcomed like old friends and given the chance to immerse themselves in the elegance of Lusitano horsemanship.
Riding at Quinta do Falcão is tailored to each guest, with private lessons led by Pedro Teixeira Farto, an accomplished rider and trainer with a deep understanding of classical methods. Whether you’re refining your seat or tackling the intricate movements of working equitation, the instruction is thoughtful, patient, and completely centred around building harmony and communication with the horse. The riding horses, mainly Lusitanos and Lusitano-crosses, are beautifully trained, responsive, and forward-going, making them a pleasure for both experienced riders and those looking to grow their skills.
The estate itself has a long history of breeding and training Lusitanos and is still run with care and passion by the Salvador family. From the stables to the farmhouse kitchen, every part of Quinta do Falcão reflects warmth, tradition, and a deep respect for the horse. The accommodation is simple, comfortable, and full of rustic charm, with hearty meals shared around the table and a relaxed atmosphere that invites connection—whether with fellow guests, the horses, or the land itself.
