Quinta do Falcão Classical Dressage & Working Equitation

Overview

Quinta do Falcão offers a truly special horse riding holiday in the heart of Portugal, where the focus is on classical dressage, traditional Portuguese equitation, and the unique bond between horse and rider. Set just outside the historic town of Tomar in the Ribatejo region, this charming family-run estate is a peaceful haven where guests are welcomed like old friends and given the chance to immerse themselves in the elegance of Lusitano horsemanship.

Riding at Quinta do Falcão is tailored to each guest, with private lessons led by Pedro Teixeira Farto, an accomplished rider and trainer with a deep understanding of classical methods. Whether you’re refining your seat or tackling the intricate movements of working equitation, the instruction is thoughtful, patient, and completely centred around building harmony and communication with the horse. The riding horses, mainly Lusitanos and Lusitano-crosses, are beautifully trained, responsive, and forward-going, making them a pleasure for both experienced riders and those looking to grow their skills.

When you’re not in the arena, there’s the chance to hack out along the banks of the River Nabão or explore the scenic countryside. The estate is only a short drive from Tomar, known for its Templar heritage and the Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You’re also within easy reach of Golegã, the famed capital of the Portuguese horse, where the annual November horse fair draws equestrians from around the world.

Just across the road from Quinta do Falcão, you’ll find a fascinating Equestrian Museum that offers a rich glimpse into Portugal’s riding heritage. The collection features authentic garments, traditional tack, elegant carriages, and beautifully preserved vintage posters. There’s even a charming on-site chapel—available should you feel inspired to tie the knot in a truly unique setting!

The estate itself has a long history of breeding and training Lusitanos and is still run with care and passion by the Salvador family. From the stables to the farmhouse kitchen, every part of Quinta do Falcão reflects warmth, tradition, and a deep respect for the horse. The accommodation is simple, comfortable, and full of rustic charm, with hearty meals shared around the table and a relaxed atmosphere that invites connection—whether with fellow guests, the horses, or the land itself.

Rui Salvador, the co-owner of  Quinta do Falcão is a distinguished Portuguese horseman and former bullfighter renowned for his exceptional skill and daring performances in the arena. Known as the “Cavaleiro dos Ferros Impossíveis” (Horseman of the Impossible Spears), he captivated audiences with his fearless style and technical mastery. After a remarkable 40-year career, Rui retired from bullfighting in 2024, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire.

Quinta do Falcão is more than just a riding holiday—it’s a chance to live and breathe the rhythm of Portuguese equestrian life, guided by expert hands and in the company of some truly special horses.

Riding & Itinerary

Quinta do Falcão is home to a carefully selected group of Lusitano and Lusitano-cross horses, each chosen for their character, talent, and suitability for classical riding. These horses are the pride of the estate—well-schooled, kind, and forward-thinking, with the natural ability and trainability that makes the Lusitano breed so beloved among dressage and working equitation enthusiasts. The herd includes around 25 horses of varying levels and personalities, allowing for excellent pairings between horse and rider. Some are ideal schoolmasters for riders who want to practise lateral movements, flying changes, and pirouettes, while others offer more of a challenge for those looking to advance their skills. All are treated as individuals, with daily turnout, careful management, and a calm, supportive environment that produces willing and happy partners.

Leading the training at Quinta do Falcão is Pedro Teixeira Farto, a native of the Ribatejo region and a passionate horseman whose reputation continues to grow in Portugal and beyond. Pedro grew up riding and working with Lusitanos, and his deep understanding of the breed is evident in every aspect of his teaching. He combines classical Portuguese and academic principles with a modern, thoughtful approach to instruction. His lessons are always one to one private sessions, clear, engaging, and always tailored to the needs and level of the rider, whether you’re working on your seat, refining transitions, or exploring more advanced movements.

Pedro’s teaching goes beyond technique—he has a real gift for helping riders connect with their horse, understand how it thinks and moves, and become more effective and empathetic in the saddle. He’s known for his calm, encouraging manner and his ability to explain even the most complex ideas in a way that makes sense. His aim is always to create better partnerships between horse and rider, and guests often leave with a renewed sense of confidence and inspiration.

Whether you’re looking to deepen your understanding of classical dressage, experience the precision and beauty of Portuguese equitation, or simply enjoy time with exceptional horses in a beautiful part of the world, a stay at Quinta do Falcão offers all of this and more.
