TANZANIA
Zanzibar Beach Riding
Overview
Zanzibar offers an unforgettable horse riding holiday where white sand beaches, swaying palms, and turquoise waters create a dreamlike backdrop for adventure. Just off the coast of Tanzania, this vibrant island is a paradise for riders looking to explore tropical landscapes on horseback while soaking up the island’s rich culture and laid-back charm.
Riding experiences here are as varied as the island itself. Sunrise beach rides offer peaceful moments in the early light, while long canters along the tide line deliver pure exhilaration. One of the most unique experiences is swimming in the sea on horseback—a surreal and joyful encounter that’s hard to forget. Horses are based at a private 10-acre stable in Kidoti and at the beach-side stables in Nungwi, each carefully chosen for temperament and ability. Whether you’re a confident rider or someone getting back in the saddle, there’s a horse and pace to suit everyone.
The riding is led by knowledgeable, passionate guides who know both the horses and the island inside out. Their care and attention to detail—along with a deep love for the horses—create a friendly, welcoming environment for guests. Many have years of experience guiding in Africa and are skilled at tailoring each ride to match individual ability and comfort levels. Riders are often hosted by the owner herself, whose warm hospitality, storytelling, and dedication to the horses make the experience feel personal and enriching.
Beyond the beach, rides meander through coconut plantations, traditional villages, and open countryside, offering glimpses into local life and stunning views across the island. Wildlife sightings add to the magic, with the chance to spot red colobus monkeys, vibrant birdlife, and the occasional bush baby at dusk.
The stylish Z and Z2 Hotels offer a boutique beachside retreat in Nungwi. With its chic design, tropical gardens, and direct beach access, it’s the perfect base for post-ride relaxation. Guests can unwind at the rooftop spa, enjoy yoga with ocean views, or simply sip a cocktail as the sun sets over the sea. While the focus here is on riding, there’s plenty of time to enjoy the island’s other treasures—whether it’s snorkelling at Mnemba Atoll, exploring Stone Town’s spice-laced alleys, or visiting a nearby turtle sanctuary.
A horse riding holiday in Zanzibar is more than just a trip—it’s a warm, sensory experience where every hoofbeat brings a new view, a new story, and a deeper connection to this extraordinary island.
