Riding & Itinerary
Canyons and Hidden Waterfalls
Intermediate – Advanced riders
Discover the hidden beauty of Iceland’s highlands on this unforgettable six-day riding tour. Beginning at Kaldbakur farm in Hruna, the journey takes you deep into the heart of untouched nature, through ancient lava formations, along sparkling rivers, and past remote waterfalls few have ever seen.
Riders experience the true spirit of Icelandic horsemanship: the bond between horse and rider, the rhythm of the herd moving freely through vast open spaces, and the warm companionship of fellow travelers. Each day offers a new landscape from deep canyons and moss-covered hills to the wild serenity beneath Kerlingarfjöll mountains.
We discover the hidden gem of South Iceland: Laxárgljúfur, a breathtaking canyon carved by the crystal-clear Stóra-Laxá river. Towering cliffs, secret waterfalls, and untouched wilderness create a dramatic landscape few have seen. Hike along ancient trails, listen to the roar of hidden falls, and experience one of Iceland’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders – far from the crowds, deep in the heart of the highlands.
At the end of each day, we rest in cozy mountain huts, share stories, and enjoy hearty Icelandic meals prepared with care. This is a tour for those who love adventure, nature, and the pure joy of riding the Icelandic horse in its natural element. The host of this tour is Guðmundur Hólm and his family and friends, his passion for great food and exceptional horses shines through in his tours.
Golden Circle
Intermediate – Advanced riders
This tour was nominated by CNNgo as one of the 15 greatest horse treks in the world! What better or more unique way to do the popular Golden Circle Tour than by riding the Icelandic horse through the lovely countryside of South Iceland. The key attractions on this classic tour are the hot spring area of Geysir and Gullfoss or the Golden Waterfall. Each one guaranteed to take your breath away.
This tour is perfect for families and those not having the required riding experience for our highland tours. Keep in mind that riding days can be long so you should be in good physical shape and have the basic horsemanship skills.
On the first riding day you get acquainted with the unique Icelandic Horse and its special extra gait as we take an easy trek along the banks of the majestic Thjórsá River. We continue towards Gullfoss Waterfall with its thundering waters and the hot spring area of Geysir. After a relaxed day's riding in that locality, we next explore some of more remote places, well off the beaten track. On our way to our accommodation, we visit the charming Secret Lagoon for a well-deserved bath. We cross the highland moor of Hrunaheiði and enjoy good riding tracks when trekking past iconic basalt columns at Hrepphólar on our way back to Kálfhóll Farm.
Geysir Gullfoss Special
Intermediate – Advanced riders
Perfect tour for families and riders who want to see Iceland´s most famous attractions on horseback. You get to know the Icelandic horse and the Icelandic way of trail riding in a relaxed atmosphere. While you ascend to a highland plateau you will notice the changes in nature as you reach higher ground. A breathtaking view of the mountain ranges and glaciers of the highland awaits you when you reach the top of Haukadalsheiði. Participants on this tour join the longer Golden Circle Tour for four days but return to Reykjavik on the fifth day while those on the longer ride continue.
The Magic of Vatnajökull
Intermediate – Advanced riders
The southeast of Iceland is a region where nature’s raw power meets breathtaking beauty. Here, you will experience Iceland’s elements in an intimate and profound way. Dominating the landscape is Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier, its icy expanse stretching as far as the eye can see. Our journey takes us along its mighty presence, weaving between glaciers, black sand beaches, and rugged mountains, offering a stunning contrast of fire and ice.
The first half of our adventure follows the glacier’s edge toward the remote district of Lón, a hidden gem nestled between the gabbro mountains of Vestra-Horn and Eystra-Horn. This area serves as a perfect interlude between the glacier and the wild Eastfjords. At the heart of this region lies the historic farm of Stafafell, which stretches from the ocean to the highlands.
Throughout our ride, we traverse colorful landscapes, from volcanic sand dunes to lush river valleys, experiencing the ever-changing beauty of Icelandic nature. We will stay each night at Stafafell Hostel, a charming lodge built by the last priest of the region in the late 20th century. Hearty Icelandic breakfasts and dinners will be provided, while snacks, sandwiches, and drinks will be available throughout the day. The host of this tour is the horse farmer Gunnlaugur at Silfur hestar Stafafelli.
The host of this tour is Gunnlaugur a well known horse farmer and known for great horses: He has been breeding wind-dappled horses for 30 years and ran a horse rental for 10 years. In recent years, he has focused more on horse tours. As the fourth generation of his family at Stafafell in Lón, he grew up in this remote countryside, attended secondary school at Laugarvatn, and later pursued university studies in Canada and the USA.

Riding Between Rivers
All levels
In this tour we ride out from the Farm Kálfhóll along the pleasant trail at Thjórsá glacier-fed river, the longest river in Iceland with a view of the mighty Volcano Mountain Hekla, looking over us from a distant.
We will also ride along with the river Hvítá through moss and grassy farmland, and enjoy the Icelandic horse on his own home ground. This tour is ideal for families with children and/or riders that would like to experience Iceland on horseback in a quiet environment.
Landmannalaugar – Mt. Hekla
Advenced riders only
This highland adventure is perfect for advanced riders who love a challenge. Mount Hekla is a highly active volcano often titled the “Queen of Iceland”. The mountain towers regally over the region and every day we see evidence of its numerous devastating eruptions throughout the ages. In the old times, people actually believed it to be the gateway to hell. Landmannalaugar is a geothermal wonderland in the Southern Highlands. It’s natural bathing pools are only one of the highlights which make this area one of Iceland’s most popular destinations for nature lovers.
Our ride starts along the river banks of the mighty glacial river Thjórsá, with a magnificent view on glacier Eyjafjallajökull and Volcano Hekla. The beautiful area Landmannahellir is a fitting outpost in the central highlands before going on to enjoy the colorful rhyolite mountains in Landmannalaugar, surrounded by black lava fields.
Our way back to civilization leads us down from the mountains and into black lava and green valleys. The spirited and sure-footed horses make this tour an experience of a lifetime for anyone seeking a challenging highland adventure.
