Sosian Lodge Laikipia

Overview

Sosian Lodge is a unique 24,000-acre wildlife ranch, that offers a unique blend of tourism, conservation and traditional cattle ranching in Laikipia’s highlands and attracts both single riders, family and private group visitors. It’s versatile place to stay and each day brings a different activity to enjoy in this African wilderness.

With many years of careful management, the wildlife on Sosian has flourished. They have a diverse cross section of habitats that hosts a long list of birds and mammals, including elephant, hippo, buffalo, lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, giraffe, zebra, kudu, oryx, impala, warthog, plus many smaller predators such as bat-eared foxes, genet cats and serval cats. Wildlife viewing is rewarding, whilst still maintaining the true wilderness of this area which makes each sighting all the more special and exciting.

The original ranch house was built in the 1940’s by Italian artisans and has been beautifully restored to accommodate up to 14 people (and more on request). The ranch lies at an altitude of 5500ft, which makes for a perfect climate, with no record of malaria and ideal place to visit with children.

Four double cottages are dotted throughout the gardens, against a backdrop of Mt Kenya with views for miles over the Laikipia Plateau. This is true unspoilt Africa. The lodge has a beautiful swimming pool, tennis court, organic vegetable garden and a stable yard of 30 safari horses.

On any given day you can enjoy a vast array of exciting and interesting activities, horse riding, day and night game drives, guided walks, fishing, fly camping with or without the horses, camel treks, waterfalls, kayaking, swimming and cattle ranching.

The Destination

To the north-east of the Great Rift Valley, and north-west of snow-capped Mount Kenya, the high plains of Laikipia are increasingly recognised as one of Kenya’s best safari regions. Stretching between the iconic Mount Kenya and the northern deserts, these high rangelands are interlaced with north-flowing streams and rivers, which predominantly feed into the Ewaso Nyiro, the largest river in northern Kenya.

Once characterized by vast ranch estates and a significant livestock sector, Laikipia has evolved into a hub for remarkable conservation initiatives. Here, efforts are focused on wildlife preservation, fostering a tailored approach to both adventurous and often luxurious safari tourism, while providing economic benefits to the local communities, including the the Samburu, Ilaikipiak Maasai, and Mokogodo Maasai communities.
