Quinta do Rol Classical Dressage

Overview

Just 45 minutes from Lisbon yet wrapped in peaceful countryside, Quinta do Rol is a dream destination for riders who love beautiful horses, great coaching, and a touch of luxury. This family-owned dressage and wine estate is run by the wonderfully warm Carlos and Rita Melo Ribeiro, who welcome every guest like an old friend. Their passion for Lusitano horses, top-class training and easygoing Portuguese hospitality is the heartbeat of the whole experience.

The estate’s purpose-built equestrian centre is world-class – a vast indoor arena with excellent going and cosy viewing lounge, a massive outdoor arena, round pen, working equitation field, immaculate stabling and even wash-down and tacking bays that feel almost spa-like. Horses are groomed to perfection — gleaming coats, neatly brushed manes and supple tack — and they stay beautifully calm on the ground, yet light up with enthusiasm once you start working.

The Lusitanos themselves are exceptional. Carefully selected for temperament, rideability and talent, they’re responsive, patient and beautifully trained. Riders are thoughtfully matched to horses and lessons are usually one-to-one or in pairs, creating space for real progress. Whether you’re polishing your half-pass or experimenting with piaffe and pirouettes, you’ll find both the horses and the instruction inspiring. Resident trainers Joana and João are skilled, kind, observant and genuinely fun — the perfect combination to help you improve while keeping the atmosphere relaxed and confidence-boosting. Many guests ride different horses throughout their stay, discovering new favourites as they go.

In the cooler months, there’s sometimes the magical opportunity to ride along the deserted sands of Areia Beach on these wonderfully schooled dressage horses — a memory you’ll keep forever.

Quinta do Rol is also a fantastic choice for mixed groups. Non-riders can swim in the elegant outdoor pool, use the gym and yoga space, play tennis or basketball, borrow bikes to explore the estate, or simply unwind with a glass of estate-grown wine in the Rider’s Lounge. Beach lovers will find the Atlantic coast only 15 minutes away, and the region is famous for surfing, golf and pretty Portuguese towns. If visiting in November, don’t miss the legendary Golegã Horse Fair — a lively, colourful celebration of horses, people and tradition unlike anything else in the world.

Accommodation & Meals

Guests stay in four beautifully restored cottages on the estate — stylish, peaceful and full of Portuguese country character. Think antique furniture, beds you’ll sink into after a day in the saddle, and cosy living spaces where riders naturally gather before dinner. Each cottage has a kitchenette for teas, coffees and snacks, plus fruit and drinks always available, though you won’t need to cook — stays are fully catered and the food is a genuine highlight.

Meals are served in the main Quinta, where Sylvie, the warm and talented cook, prepares wholesome, family-style dishes using local ingredients. Breakfast sets you up with fresh sourdough, cheeses, ham, fruit, yoghurt, cereals and eggs cooked to order. Lunches are relaxed and generous, often starting with local cheeses, olives and charcuterie before a comforting Portuguese dish — perhaps a frittata, rice with poached eggs, or salads packed with vibrant toppings. Dinner is three courses and delicious – vegetable soups, slow-cooked stews or light fish dishes served in traditional crock pots, crisp salads, seasonal sides and indulgent homemade desserts (the pumpkin seed pie is a favourite!).

Between rides, unwind with a glass of Quinta do Rol wine (their white, red, rosé and sparkling wines are fantastic), take a dip in the pool, explore the vineyards by bike, or book a wine tasting and tour to discover more about this lovely estate’s craft.
