Luxury Wicklow Ride - 2 Itineraries

Overview

This luxurious seven or five day riding holiday is set in the heart of County Wicklow, known fondly as “the Garden of Ireland”, where lush rolling hills, ancient woodland and sweeping beaches create a backdrop made for adventure on horseback. Based just outside the picturesque village of Enniskerry, you’ll be riding in some of Ireland’s most beautiful countryside — and it’s all just a short hop from Dublin, yet feels like a world away.

Each day brings something new, from peaceful hacks through forest and farmland to exhilarating canters across open moorland and along the golden sands of Brittas Bay. The varied terrain keeps things fun and interesting, with trails winding past mountain lakes, through shady glens and over hilltops with stunning views of the Sugar Loaf. Rides usually last between three and five hours depending on your level and energy, and there’s also the option to enjoy lessons in flatwork, dressage, show jumping or even cross-country at the excellent on-site facilities.

The horses are a wonderful reflection of Ireland itself — kind, steady, full of character and a joy to ride. The herd includes a mix of Irish Sport Horses, Connemaras, Irish Draughts and cobs, all well-schooled, fit, and matched carefully to each rider. Whether you’re a confident novice or an experienced equestrian, you’ll be paired with a horse that suits your ability and personality, ensuring a safe, fun and confidence-building experience throughout the week.

Food is a big part of the fun. Expect daily gourmet meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) often served in top local restaurants, plus some meals at the stables. Breakfasts are varied (Irish, continental, vegan, etc.), lunches draw on fresh local produce (including eggs from the hosts’ own hens), and dinners range from relaxed hotel meals to indulgent restaurant dinners. Special foodie touches: meals at award-winning restaurants, traditional Irish “Hooley” evening with music and dancing, whiskey tasting, beach picnics and more.

When you’re not in the saddle, there’s plenty to explore. The week includes a wonderful mix of cultural and foodie experiences that showcase the best of Irish life. You’ll visit Powerscourt House and Gardens, one of Ireland’s most beautiful estates. Every experience is designed to immerse you in Ireland’s culture, from its warm hospitality to its rich culinary and musical traditions.

Your hosts are every bit as special as the setting. The riding programme is led by Kieran, an experienced equestrian coach with a background in show jumping and dressage, whose calm, professional manner makes riders instantly feel at ease. He’s joined by Colleen who grew up in South Africa riding Basutu mountain ponies. She has her BHS stage 3 qualifications and is also a Therapeutic Riding Coach. Colleen loves caring for the horses, enjoys teaching and is passionate about riding. Niall, your cheerful driver and guide, keeps everything running smoothly — from airport transfers to restaurant trips — and adds his own charm and humour to the week. Together, they’ve created a holiday that feels more like visiting old friends than joining a tour.

This is a week of genuine Irish hospitality, filled with laughter, good company and, of course, fantastic riding. Whether you’re trotting through a sun-dappled forest, galloping beside the sea, or relaxing over a hearty dinner at day’s end, you’ll come away feeling completely refreshed — and more than a little bit in love with Wicklow’s countryside and horses.

Riding & Itinerary

7 Nights Sample Itinerary

Day 1
Upon arrival at Dublin airport, transportation will be provided to your hotel for check-in. When you arrive at the stables, you will meet your fellow travellers and Kieran, our head instructor, and Niall, your host for the week over lunch/brunch. You will then receive a tour of the stables. You will also be introduced to Bear and Wolfe, our amiable German Shepherds, as well as Harvey, our charming terrier.

You will meet your new horse companion, and you are welcome to groom and tack your horse, as this is an excellent way to establish a connection. We prioritise building a strong partnership with your new friend. However, if you prefer to unwind, we are more than happy to handle the preparations for you.

At Country Cottage Stables, we adhere to a safety-first philosophy, ensuring that we carefully match you with a horse that best suits your needs. Our horses are known for their honesty, sensibility, and sure-footedness. You will then proceed to the arena, where you and your horse can become acquainted. Our assessment lesson aims to familiarise you with Kieran while he assesses your riding abilities and fitness level, making sure you are paired with the right horse. With a diverse selection of horses available, you are welcome to try different horses throughout your stay. Following your riding session, refreshments will be provided.
You will then be transferred back to the hotel, where you can relax before we escort you to a premier restaurant, offering stunning views of the surrounding countryside and the Wicklow Mountains.

Day 2
Morning ride in the forest and venture out towards the Wicklow Way with its wonderfully unspoiled spectacular mountain trails, and views of Ireland’s tallest waterfall, Powerscourt Waterfall. Lunch at Country Cottage Stables.
Lesson after lunch; try some flatwork, dressage, or jumping. A trek is possible if preferred.

Dinner this evening is in the affluent seaside heritage town of Dalkey, one of Ireland’s wealthiest suburbs and home of Bono and many famous writers and artists. En route to dinner, drive around the area spotting celebrities’ houses. Take time by yourself to wander around Dalkey village with its beautiful narrow streets lined with fancy delis and old architecture; you will understand why so many famous residents call it home. Dinner is at a fabulous restaurant that has been welcoming diners for over 60 years.

Day 3
Start the day with an early snack and tea/coffee. Transfer you to Brittas Bay beach where you meet your horse. Brittas Bay is a five-kilometer stretch of powdery sand and dunes on the Irish coast. Ride according to your level, so either a relaxing ride or if you prefer an exhilarating ride well, we are only happy to accommodate. The horses love the beach and especially love having a splash in the water. Brunch is a beach picnic.
Transfer back to the hotel to freshen up and then enjoy an afternoon exploring Avondale House and the Treetop Canopy Walk, the Meetings of the Waters and the original Avoca Handweavers.

Dinner this evening is at the hotel. Guests always appreciate a relaxed evening after an early start. And the fresh sea air.

Day 4
Leisurely breakfast and pick-up from your hotel at 10:00 a.m. Today is cross-country estate day at the foothills of the Wicklow Mountains. Enjoy a fun morning/afternoon at the vast 40-acre course with a combination of field and forest jumps, water features, and banks. We, of course, match the course to riders’ abilities. If guests would prefer to enjoy a leisurely ride around the estate or try jumps we always accommodate. Guests can also try the gallops and learn what it is like to canter or gallop along the race track. Lunch is a tail-gate picnic set against the stunning landscape, featuring a castle in the backdrop.

This evening, immerse yourself in an unforgettable experience in the highest pub in Ireland, in the Dublin Mountains. Experience traditional Irish craic agus ceol (Irish for ‘fun and music’): The Irish Hooley includes hugely experienced, traditional Irish musicians, and the world-famous, talented Irish dancers, plus a four-course meal of delicious Irish Fayre.

Of course, The Hooley may be too lively for you and you may prefer a quieter experience at the restaurant in the same venue. Menus can include Irish seafood chowder, wild Irish mussels, beef and Guinness pie, and more. Menus vary between the Hooley experience and quieter dining options.

Day 5
Morning excursion to Glendalough and Wicklow National Park: discover Ireland’s historic monastic location and glacial valley.
Lunch at Glendalough restaurant with its own unique writers room with First editions of Bram Stoker’s Dracula and James Joyce’s Ulysses (still in its original wrapping). Afternoon riding.

Gourmet BBQ at the cottage or a gourmet meal (weather dependent). Dining at the cottage offers a one-of-a-kind experience, complete with a pre-dinner drinks reception. The cottage dining room evokes the charm of a traditional Irish home, adorned with antiques from various corners of the globe.

Day 6
Dawn chorus hack. Breakfast back at the hotel.
Tour of Powerscourt Estate & Gardens, named third best Best Garden in the world by National Geographic followed by lunch. Afternoon riding. Farewell Dinner at a top local restaurant.

Day 7
Today, we bid you farewell and if you have an early departure, we can take the opportunity to take you on your last trek or enjoy your last lesson. Departure from your hotel after your trek/lesson.
