The Lake Ranch Wyoming

Overview

Welcome to The Lake Ranch – an unforgettable escape nestled in the heart of the North-East Wyoming, within the legendary Black Hills near the borders of Montana and South Dakota. The landscape here is beyond words, with diverse scenery that includes canyons, prairies, valleys, and forests, offering a true taste of the American West.

Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Missouri Buttes and just a stone’s throw from the iconic Devils Tower, the first national monument of the United States, The Lake Ranch provides a unique blend of natural beauty and authentic ranch life. This family-owned ranch welcomes guests not as tourists, but as part of the family, offering an immersive experience that captures the essence of a working ranch.

Each day at The Lake Ranch begins with a hearty breakfast, followed by a visit to the corrals where the horses, having grazed peacefully overnight, await their riders. Guests are encouraged to saddle up and bond with their horses before setting out on trails that wind through wooded hills and open pastures. The vast, fragrant prairies and the sight of Devil’s Tower rising in the distance create a serene environment where time slows down, allowing you to reconnect with nature and yourself.

Kati visited here and said:

The Lake Ranch has a special place in my heart. The land around Devils Tower is known as Native Americans' sacred land and there's something so beautiful and magical about this area that it is difficult to put into words. Riding on the ranch, I was often left speechless and even emotional from the beauty in front of my eyes. Those moments have stayed with me.

I also appreciated the way this ranch operates with a 'softer touch'. Here cattle drives are conducted at a slow pace not to stress the animals unnecessarily, and everything they do, seems to be somehow quite mindful and very friendly and welcoming. They get regular visits from the Native American who still come visit this land, and the Amish men from nearby village who come help on the ranch. There we were all sat at the lunch table from different parts of the world and different walks of life, sharing a meal together. I found that incredible.

The Lake Ranch also has their own working horse breeding programme and constantly have young foals that they proudly present to guests. It's a win win, the babies get used to humans from early age and guests are smitten. The lead cowboy, Chase, has a constant rotation of young horses in his training programme before they're ready to be sold or kept as working horses on the home ranch. The best thing about my stay at The Lake Ranch was the time I got to spend with Chase and the family sons. They're very happy to answer any questions and show how they work their horses. I learnt so much about Western riding and working horses during my stay, and I guess, thanks to my eagerness, I was lucky to also try some of the young horses fresh off Chase's training programme and oh boy, they were a pleasure to ride! These horses never ceased to impress me with their intelligence and calm nature, yet they were fast as wind when needed.

Riding & Itinerary

Lake Ranch is a working ranch and there is no set itinerary. Guests are welcome to take part in various daily activities on the ranch moving cattle with the cowboys, checking up on the herds of horses, or just enjoy a wonderful scenic trail ride. All trails start from the home ranch, there's no need to truck horses anywhere.

Riders of all skill levels are welcome. Lake Ranch has their own breeding programme and over 100 horses guaranteeing a suitable horse for all levels. Beginners can even join in on cattle drives, as the cattle are moved at a slow, relaxed pace here (the family have a soft approach to cattle farming and don't like to unnecessarily stress the animals), and assistance is always available. While no prior riding experience is required, a moderate level of fitness is helpful, as you may spend up to 6 hours a day in the saddle.

And if you're an experienced rider and truly interested in Western riding, here you get a chance to try some of the finer working horses and feel their intelligence, cow sense, and fast, sharp moves. The lead cowboy responsible for breaking and training the young horses is an incredible horseman and loves to share his knowledge and teach you tricks. Just ask him!

Spring is magical time to visit as there's new life on the ranch with lots of newly born calves and foals. The family will proudly take you to the pastures where their studs and breeding mares graze with young foals by their side. It is very important the young foals get used to humans from young age, and they don't mind you approaching them.

June is the time when cattle is gathered and moved to a corral for a count, health check, vaccinations, and when young calves are branded and castrated. This is busy time on the ranch and often cowboys from nearby ranches join in for help. At the end of a branding day, there's always a barbeque and great atmosphere.

End of summer may involve some occasional cattle work, perhaps moving the herds from one pasture to another, but this time is mainly for scenic trail rides, and Lake Ranch truly delivers on that front. This area is known as American Indian's sacred land and has something special about it that is difficuelt to put into words. The views and the beauty of the land will take your breath away.

Autumn is time to gather the herds, some will be sold, some moved to their winter pastures.
