The Hideout Guest Ranch Wyoming

Overview

There are plenty of ranches in the American West, but The Hideout has built its reputation on doing things properly. From the quality of the horses to the warmth of the welcome, everything here feels authentic, relaxed and thoughtfully done.

Set in Shell, Wyoming, and surrounded by an incredible 650,000 acres of mountains, canyons and open range, The Hideout offers a true Western riding experience where every day in the saddle is different. One day you might be winding through mountain trails in the Bighorn Mountains, the next crossing wide open plains or helping move cattle alongside the ranch team (seasonal and subject to availability). The scenery is breathtaking and you'll cover miles of country that most visitors to Wyoming never get to see.

What really makes The Hideout special, though, is the people. The team are passionate horsemen and women who genuinely enjoy sharing their knowledge, whether you're keen to improve your riding, develop your natural horsemanship skills or simply spend long days exploring on beautifully trained horses. With only around 25 guests each week, there's a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere and plenty of individual attention.

Life at the ranch isn't all about riding either. You can cast a line in a mountain stream, join a yoga session, explore the surrounding countryside or simply sit back and watch the sun go down over the Wyoming landscape. Evenings are spent enjoying great food, good company and sharing stories with fellow guests from around the world.

If you're looking for a riding holiday that combines exceptional horses, spectacular scenery and genuine Western hospitality, The Hideout is hard to beat. It's the kind of place riders return to year after year—not because it tries to be luxurious or flashy, but because it simply gets everything right.

Accommodation & Meals

After a day in the saddle, The Hideout is a lovely place to come back to. The accommodation combines authentic Western character with all the comforts you'd hope for. Rooms are spacious and cosy, with air conditioning, heating, Wi-Fi, mini-fridges and Nespresso machines, while the porches, complete with rocking chairs, are the perfect place to sit with a coffee and admire the views across Shell Canyon and the Bighorn Mountains.

If you'd like a little extra space, the private casitas offer a wonderful retreat. With separate bedrooms, their own washer and dryer, and spectacular mountain views, they're ideal if you're looking for a little more privacy during your stay.

One of our favourite touches has to be the heated outdoor pool – just the thing for easing tired muscles after a long day in the saddle.

All meals are included, and food is very much part of the experience at The Hideout. Mornings begin with a hearty homemade breakfast, whether that's eggs cooked to order, pancakes, French toast or a selection from the breakfast buffet before heading out to ride. On full-day rides you'll take a freshly prepared packed lunch with you, while guests enjoying a half-day activity return to the lodge for lunch.

Evenings are relaxed and sociable, with everyone coming together to enjoy a home-cooked dinner accompanied by beer, wine or your drink of choice. The menu changes throughout the week and isn't just about steak and burgers – you can expect a mix of Western favourites alongside dishes featuring chicken, fish, seafood, pork, pasta and fresh seasonal ingredients.

Before dinner there's a daily cocktail hour, a lovely tradition where the owners or wranglers chat through the following day's activities and everyone has the chance to get to know each other. It's these little moments that help create the friendly atmosphere The Hideout is so well known for.

The kitchen team are happy to cater for most common dietary requirements with advance notice, although, due to the ranch's remote Wyoming location, more complex diets such as vegan meals aren't always possible.

Comfortable accommodation, hearty home-cooked food and genuine Western hospitality all come together to make The Hideout feel less like a hotel and more like staying with friends who just happen to live in one of the most beautiful corners of Wyoming.

The Destination

Shell is located in Big Horn County, Wyoming, at the base of the Big Horn Mountains, at the mouth of Shell Canyon. Nearby Shell Creek rises in the Big Horn Mountains and joins the Big Horn River just north of Greybull.

The population was only 83 at the 2010 Census. The community is named for the abundance of fossil shells located in the area. Nearby exposed formations such as the Cloverly Formation and the Morrison Formation have yielded numerous fossils of dinosaurs and other animals. Located to the west of the town is the Red Gulch Dinosaur Tracksite, a rare collection of dinosaur tracks from the Jurassic period.
