End of the world by Jakotango

Overview

Take a journey “to the end of the world” through Tierra del Fuego, Argentina’s southernmost province known as the Land of Fire.

The End of the World ride takes you through some of the wildest and most untouched regions of Argentina, deep into Tierra del Fuego. Picture the aroma of campfires, the rhythm of galloping horses, and the raw beauty of dust and rain. This is adventure at its purest, you’re invited to experience a journey like no other. Gentle, spirited horses ensure a comfortable ride through rocky landscapes, while donkeys carry drinks and provisions. Along the way, sparkling turquoise rivers offer the perfect opportunity for a refreshing swim.

The ride is provided by partners Jakob Von Plessen and Marcos Villamil. Jakob is a seasoned guide who grew up in Argentina immersed in its rich traditions. From a young age, Jakob developed a deep bond with horses and cattle, learning the ways of the land from warm-hearted gaucho families who taught him to appreciate the simple beauty of nature. Jakob spent his 20s guiding riding safaris in Kenya before settling back in Argentina, bringing his safari expertise with him. He always had a taste for fun and adventure and these are adventurous rides.

Marcos’ life has always revolved around horses and farming, beginning in Buenos Aires before finding sanctuary on his family’s farm. His passion for the equestrian world grew under the guidance of Angelito, a gaucho who taught him the art of breaking wild horses. By age 19, he embarked on transformative journeys, including an extraordinary 9,000 km journey across Argentina with three horses, and deepening his connection with Argentina’s landscapes and his equine companions.

Marcos will be your lead guide on this incredible journey in Tierra del Fuego, and will support riders along the way, sharing captivating tales woven from the rich tapestry of his homeland. He speaks both English and Spanish.

Riding & Itinerary

Horses – Predominantly the Argentine criollo horse crossed with Quarter Horse, Thoroughbred and Percheron. Jakotango is operating a breeding program to produce the ideal mountain-safari horse and has imported the first Noriker stallion from Austria into the country to cross with Criollo mares. All of the horses are trained to neck-rein.

Description below is an example of the program. Jakotango will do everything possible to follow the indicated itinerary, although spot changes can occur due to unforeseen circumstances. Rides are subject to change depending on weather, location, accommodation and difficulty of terrain. In the unlikely event that this happens on your trip, we ask you flexibility and understanding. This is a sporty and adventurous vacation.

Day 1
You fly from Buenos Aires to Río Grande, where our team is already waiting for you. When you arrive at the San José Lodge, you get to know the team and the other participants over a leisurely breakfast and discuss the schedule for the next few days.

The Estancia San José is Jakotango’s headquarters, where we also spend the first two nights. You have a little time to freshen up before lunch. In true Argentinian tradition, we have a siesta in the afternoon before we set off on our first ride. This is relatively short but gives you the opportunity to get to know the horse and the gaucho riding style. We end the day with a leisurely dinner and drinks.

Day 2
After a hearty breakfast, we saddle up the horses and ride along the Río Grande. The river is home to the largest trout in the world! We have a picnic and a siesta on the riverbank. In the afternoon, we return to the estancia, covering a long distance at a gallop. We stop to drink a whiskey at the historic trenches dug during the Beagle Conflict of 1978 – a border dispute between Chile and Argentina that was finally settled by the Pope.

Day 3
Today is the longest day of riding, covering around 60 km in eight hours. We will gallop for a long time across the steppes and get ever closer to the mountains. We will take the picnic with us in the saddlebags and take a break in a beautiful place on the Río Menendez. The destination of today’s ride is the Estancia Río Apen. Here you will be accommodated in simple caravans with double beds and sleeping bags. There is a hut with a fireplace where dinner is served.

Day 4
Today we will be changing horses. The horses you have ridden in the last few days will be brought back to San José and we will continue riding on the horses provided by the Estancia El Boquerón. The estancia is the destination of today’s ride. The yellow house is the centre of the island, which we will reach in time for lunch after a three-hour ride. In the afternoon you can go on another ride or go for a walk on your own.

Day 5
We now ride into the complete wilderness. We leave our luggage behind – we can only take as much as fits in the saddlebags and what we need for an overnight stay. The Puesto Reública, our destination today, can only be reached on horseback.

El República is a very remote, simple accommodation that was built as a shepherd’s camp. You sleep in dome tents, on camp beds with mattresses and sleeping bags. Dinner and breakfast are prepared on the open fire under the stars.

Day 6
On our way back to Boqueron we take the route that takes us to the highest peak of the trip. The scenery is breathtaking and exciting, but you should not be afraid of heights! We stop for a picnic and lunch at the summit before we continue riding and look forward to the hot shower and the comfortable beds at El Boquerón.

Day 7
In the morning, we ride up the “Cerro Pelado” but return to El Boquerón for lunch. You must now say goodbye to the horses, gauchos and guides, because you will continue in the off-road vehicle to Estancia Viamonte. The farm was founded in 1902 by Lucas Bridges, the author of “Uttermost Part of the Earth”, who gave work and shelter to persecuted indigenous inhabitants seeking protection. Last dinner together and good night.

Day 8
After breakfast you will be taken to Ushuaia airport (approx. 3 hours' drive) for your flight home.

Please ask about tailor made add ons in Argentina – we know the country well and these can include:

  • Visiting other Estancias – Cordoba (pampas) and Corrientes (wetlands)

  • Buenos Aires – we will guide you to the best authentic tango show and secret bars

  • Iguazu – a world wonder

  • El Calafate – visit the glaciers and ice fields

  • Salta – Aztec country

Accommodation & Meals

During your week-long safari “at the end of the world,” you’ll experience a range of accommodations, each offering a unique charm and comfort. From historic estancias to remote camps, each stay enhances your journey through the breathtaking landscapes of Tierra del Fuego.

Estancia San José is situated on 8,000 hectares of private land, with the majestic Río Grande running through it. This estancia, once a sheep farm and recently owned by conservationist Ted Turner, offers a glimpse into its rich history. The guest rooms feature en-suite bathrooms, while the former shearing shed has been transformed into a warm and inviting living area with a fireplace.

Estancia Río Apen, located on a hill with fantastic views, provides accommodations in gaucho caravans. Each caravan has its own bathroom and two double beds. Guests gather in a charming cottage that serves as the communal space, complete with a bar, dining room, and a traditional parrilla for open-fire grilling.

Estancia El Boquerón lies deep within the heart of the island, offering a cozy retreat with four bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a comfortable living and dining area. Guests spend two relaxing nights here, enjoying the tranquil surroundings.

Puesto República is the most remote location on the safari, accessible only by horseback. Supplies are carried in by pack horses, and the experience is authentic camping under the stars. Guests dine around an open fire and sleep in two-person tents equipped with camp beds, mattresses, and sleeping bags. While there are no showers, fresh mountain springs provide a refreshing way to wash up. This rustic camp offers a true immersion in nature for one unforgettable night.

Estancia Viamonte, the final stop on the journey, is the oldest estancia on the Argentine side of the island. Once home to Lucas Bridges, a legendary figure in the history of the Argentine south, the lodge provides a handful of en-suite rooms where guests can unwind on their last night at the end of the world.

Each accommodation reflects the unique character of the region, blending comfort and authenticity to create an extraordinary adventure.

Food - Argentina is celebrated for its exceptional cuisine, especially its renowned meats, but we are pleased to cater to a variety of dietary preferences. Whether you are vegetarian or have other special dietary requirements, please let us know in advance, and we will ensure your meals are thoughtfully prepared to suit your needs.

It’s known for its dramatic landscape of snowy mountains, glaciers, tundra and wind-sculpted trees. Its main island, Isla Grande, is home to the Argentine resort town of Ushuaia. Sometimes called “the End of the World,” Ushuaia is a gateway to the region and Antarctica to the south.
