Chubeka Trails - 2 Itineraries

Overview

We are thrilled to offer our first destination in Eswatini with Chubeka Trails on the Milwane Wildlife Sanctuary. Milwane is situated in the picturesque Ezulwini Valley (Valley of Heaven), flanked by dramatic backdrop of mountains and the huge Usuthu Forest stetchinng into the distance. Chubeka Trails explores on horseback the northern section of the 4560 hectare park, as far as Luphohlo Peak.

Mlilwane is a thin sliver of land, at most 4km wide, thus unable to support large herds of game. However, between the grasslands, dams, mountain and forests, there are a number of animal species to be seen including crocodile, zebra, blue wildebeest, kudu, nyala, impala, blesbuck, reedbuck, warthog, grey duiker and at least three species of mongoose. Seldom seen, but present in the sanctuary are the ever-elusive leopard and a variety of smaller mammals like bushbaby, aardvark, genet, porcupine, honey badger and civet.

The Mlilwane Hill has been fenced off for the propagation of locally rare and threatened species. Slow movement along trails and roads provide sightings of waterbuck, steenbok, red hartebeest, red and blue duiker, klipspringer, oribi and suni. Reptiles are well represented in crocodiles, monitor lizards, skinks and the southern tree agama, with a good selection of snakes. Amphibians let their presence be known near the water sources just prior rain – painted reed frog, caco’s, platanna, puddle and stream frogs and at least four species of toad.

You will also have the opportunity to experience KaMsholo, a wildlife rich 700 hectare reserve dominated by the Umbrella Acacia with a wide range of species included giraffe, reedback, waterbuck and ostrich.

The Chubeka Trails motto is “Rough a little, remember it forever”, guests are encouraged to live the experience to the full by taking part grooming, feeding, saddling up and helping prepare food on overnight camp outs.
