BOTSWANA
Cha Cha Metsi
Overview
Cha Cha Metsi Camp is a delightful new permanent camp brought to you by the legendary David Foot and his hard-working team. The camp is owned and run by the Foot’s close friends Clyde and Marieke Niven. Clyde is the grandson of Sir Percy Fitzpatrick, author of the classic book Jock of the Bushveld. Both have had years of experience in the safari industry, but more importantly their philosophy of “Touch the Earth Lightly” fits in perfectly with the belief of small, intimate, personal camps and a green footprint, which includes a commitment to involve and benefit the local communities.
In the past the Bayei tribe traversed the entire length of the Delta (250 km) by mokoro (the original dugout canoe). Guests will thus have the opportunity to experience the Delta in this traditional manner – tranquillity and relaxation at its best. The Santantadibe River is a permanently flowing waterway, so the camp is surrounded by classic Okavango scenery – lagoons, floodplains and tree lined islands – making for wonderful riding and walking through stunning scenery and an incredible diversity of wildlife. It will also be possible to partake in some fishing (catch and release), and a game viewing vehicle will be on standby if needed for a change.
Known by many as the “Jewel of the Kalahari” the Okavango Delta is one of the most extraordinary game areas in the world changing from wetlands with floods to dry land during the course of the year. Floodwaters from the Angolan highlands flow 1,200 km down the Cuito and Cubango Rivers before joining forces to form the Okavango River. On reaching Botswana the waters fan out covering 15,000 sq./km before disappearing into the Kalahari sands, never to reach the ocean. The flood varies from year to year and can never be quite predicted but normally during the months of July-August you have plenty of water with it receding much of the rest of the year in recent times.
Here you find some of the greatest wildlife concentrations in Africa including at least one third of the continent’s remaining elephants as well as herds of buffalo, zebra, giraffe and a multitude of antelope species. All, of course, followed by the large carnivores – lion, leopard, cheetah and one of Africa’s last remaining healthy populations of the African wild dog. There is no better way to experience the Okavango Delta than on horseback. With the excitement of big game viewing, combined with ultimate tranquillity, it is one of the most sought-after wilderness destinations of the world.
Cha Cha Metsi Combo Ride is an opportunity to experience riding out of a fixed camp with some time also in a traditional lightweight mobile camp. Starting with 2 nights in the barefoot luxury of Cha Cha Metsi the safari then moves to a lightweight mobile camp for 3 nights before returning to Cha Cha Metsi for the last 2 nights of the safari.

Riding & Itinerary
There is no set itinerary on this safari but the daily routine as the guides will be guided by your wishes and the movement of animals as to where they will go. Generally safari life starts with an early wake up call and coffee and a biscuit in bed followed by a delicious breakfast and then up on to your horse for a mornings adventure usually 3-5 hours. A big lunch followed by a siesta during the midday heat and then it’s on to the evening activities…more riding, or fishing or a game drive…there is always lots happening.
Please Note: This safari is usually guided by David Foot – although we are unable to guarantee this. On rare occasions an alternative lead guide may be your host.
Shorter Itineraries: We can also tailor make shorter rides for 2 riders or more, please ask for a quote.
Horse are mostly Boerperd and Thoroughbred crosses with some Appaloosas and local bush horses. They range in height from 14.3hh to 16hh.
The tack is mostly snaffles bridles and South African trail saddles or McClellan type saddles, but there are some English Wintec synthetic saddles available upon request.

The Destination
The Okavango Delta is one of Africa's last great natural sanctuaries, a pristine and rich wilderness home to vast concentrations of wildlife. The Okavango is produced by seasonal flooding. The Okavango River drains the summer (January–February) rainfall from the Angola highlands and the surge flows 1,200 km in around one month. The waters then spread over the 250 by 150 km area of the delta over the next four months (March–June).
It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as one of the few interior delta systems that do not flow into a sea or ocean. The Okavango Delta is renowned for its incredible wildlife, with some of the most sought-after species, including elephants, lions, leopards, buffalos, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, and many species of antelope. The delta is also a birdwatcher's paradise, with over 450 species recorded in the area.
