Adventurous Catalonia Trails - 4 Itineraries

Overview

This is an amazing collection of 4 different trail rides in the North of Spain for the adventurous rider – from riding along beaches, following the coastline and riding the trails of the outlaws, crossing the border into France.

You will be riding, fit, Andalucian type horses, which have been selected carefully and well handled by owner Rudi Sotlz. Along the way, you can expect to stay in guesthouses, hotels, and farmhouses, all chosen for their warm welcome and charm.

In 1993 Rudi Stolz had the idea to create trail rides in Catalonia and over the years the rides have developed from one-week round trips to a variety of different and challenging trail-rides, covering the Catalan countryside from the mountains to the sea.

Rudi‘s trails are captivating as he manages to show the rider the stunning beauty of the country, on trails that are varied in speed and terrain (from small hidden paths and tracks to wide open beaches). With his many years of experience, he is able to take you on a riding journey to explore the culture, scenery and cuisine of the local area and people. Rudi’s rides are safe and balanced, which is attributable to his intensive training and the natural handling of the horses.

Riding & Itinerary

Mediterranean Trail

  • A circular trail through Catalonia, crossing green hilly landscapes and mountains to the beaches of the Mediterranean

  • 2 days riding along the beaches

  • Medieval towns, accommodation in comfortable natural stone houses and family run farms and hotels.

The trail begins with arrival and transfer to the 16th-century Catalan farmhouse, Mas Alba. The journey first leads through dense forests, along the River Fluvia's tropical-looking valleys, and to an old mill accommodation. The ride then follows the Fluvia to its estuary, offering a view of the Gulf of Roses and the first glimpse of the sea. The middle days are the highlight, featuring exhilarating canters along the kilometre-long sandy beaches, a climb to the Montgrí massif for panoramic views, and riding through the river beds of the Ter. The final days involve exploring the medieval 'pearls' of the Catalan coast, such as Pals and Peratallada, before completing the circuit back to the starting farm, Mas Alba, on Day 6 for a final evening by the pool.

Wild Coast – Pirates Trail

  • A sensational Mediterranean landscape along the Costa Brava

  • Steep cliffs, hidden coves, and lovely beaches

  • An exhilarating beach gallop on Playa Grande

This 7-day adventurous coastal trail starts near the French border and focuses on the rugged, pirate-history-rich landscape of the Costa Brava. The journey begins by immediately climbing demanding mountain terrain, passing the Benedictine monastery Sant Pere de Rhodes with stunning sea views, before descending to the fishing village of Port de la Selva. The next stage is an exciting Cap de Creus ride across the craggy peninsula, characterized by bizarre rock formations and leading to a swim-friendly bay picnic, concluding in the beautiful whitewashed village of Cadaqués. The trail then continues through wild coastal mountains and over a pass offering spectacular views of the Bay of Roses, followed by a visit to the mighty Roses Citadel to learn about its pirate-defence history and riding through the wetlands of the Aiguamolls National Park. The adventure culminates with an exhilarating beach gallop on Playa Grande, followed by a final ride through continental sand dunes and impressive cliffs before transferring to the final accommodation.

Mountain & Sea Trail

  • "Jungle" Riding in the Fluvia Valley

  • Climbing a high pass with magnificent views of the Pyrenees peaks

  • Swimming with the horses

Scenic riding through mountainous and coastal regions, focusing on immersion in nature and opportunities for swimming. Starting near Barcelona or Girona, the ride begins by following secluded paths and the River Fluvia's valleys, featuring tropical-like vegetation, leading to a schoolhouse accommodation at the foot of the Pyrenees. The middle section dives deep into the mountains, including riding along the Catalan Pyrenean coast, bathing in a peaceful mountain stream and a luminous water pool, conquering a high pass for panoramic views, and exploring the impressive limestone formations and natural turquoise basins of the Garrotxa Natural Park. The final two days involve riding through cork oak forests and achieving the unique highlight of swimming with the horses in a lake, followed by an early morning ride to the "Wild Coast," where the trail culminates with riding down to a picturesque bay for a final dip in the saltwater and a farewell dinner by the sea.

Mountain & Coast Outlaw Trail / France & Spain

  • A border-crossing Catalonia-trail, between France and Spain

  • From the peaks of High Pyrenees to the Mediterranean.

  • Hostal de Trabucaires, which was once a meeting point for outlaws

  • Sunrise Beach Gallop

This 7-day circular trail through the Catalan Pyrenean foreland focuses on varied historical and natural landscapes, starting north of Barcelona and quickly heading into the hills and forests near the riding farm. Highlights include navigating a "Catalan jungle" and river crossings before relaxing at an accommodation with a pool, and exploring the rocky Garrotxa Mountains with a memorable stop for swimming in a natural pool. The trail notably crosses the border into France over a rustic pass historically used as an escape route, stopping at the simple but cosy Hostal de Trabucaires, which was once a meeting point for outlaws. The journey returns to Spain, riding through the Albera Mountains and past a mysterious castle, transitioning from mountain views of the sacred Canigó massif to the grasslands of the Empordà plain and wetlands. The adventure culminates with an early morning gallop on a miles-long sandy beach near the coast before circling back to the original starting farm.
