The Horse Drive at Silver Spur Ranch

Overview

The Horse Drive at Silver Spur Ranch is not your typical dude ranch. In fact, it is not a dude ranch at all. Prepare for an adventure unlike anything experienced before as you begin to herd 40+ horses through the Rocky Mountains of Idaho.

The horses we are herding are younger horses that have been bred at Silver Spur and are currently in their training program. The horse drive not only helps to rotate pasture but also teaches these young horses how to become sure footed animals, cross creeks, dead falls, and navigate in steep terrain all before we get on their back.

Horses have a herd instinct so they naturally want to follow other horses. You will split up and half the group will go in the front and the other half will go in the back. The group in the front has the job to lead the way and set the pace, the group in the back has to make sure all the horses are following the horses in the front and that you don’t lose any.

The horse drive is the ultimate horseback adventure. It is fast paced, has a variety of terrain to navigate, and really tests your skills. Expect to travel 15-20 miles on horseback every day.

Each day, after the ride you will arrive back at either the cabins or a campsite, welcomed with a cold beverage and homemade treat! You then have time to relax, shower (while at the cabins) or bath in the stream (while on the trail). Enjoy a little downtime to do whatever you like until dinner. Some popular things to do is relax by the fire, practice your roping skills, play horse shoes, go on a walk, or simply just enjoy the outdoors.

Accommodation & Meals

The ranch is completely off grid so perfect for a total switch off from the World. There is zero wifi or mobile reception (satellite phone for emergencies). Electricity is powered by the sun and the shower is outdoors with an endless supply of hot water to wash off the day’s dust and ease those achy muscles. Toilets are outhouse style – you want western style, you got it!

Whilst out on the horse drive, you will be staying in Kodiak canvas tents with foam pads, warm sleeping bags, and all your gear will be waiting when you arrive by horse. The first campsite has a natural warm spring you can bathe in and get all the dust off.

A campfire will be lit every evening for cooking and keeping warm. A great way to end your day and chat over the adventures had that day.

The food at Silver Spur is delicious and plentiful. Much of it is cooked over the campfire so think BBQ style with burgers and salads. Vegetarian and allergies can be catered for, please us know us in advance. Snacks and soft drinks are always on offer. There is no alcohol kept at the ranch, there is a shop on the way to the ranch which you will stop at to pick up drinks and there is a coolbox to keep your beers cold.
