The Wirths have owned and run this Rocking Z Montana ranch for generations and have a great love for horses and cattle. It’s a genuine working ranch, no frills, but still cosy and accommodating. The Wirths themselves are the warmest, friendliest family you’ll meet – they’ll certainly make sure all your cowboy or cowgirl aspirations are met on this ‘authentic’ horse riding ranch holiday in the USA.
Rocking Z is a genuine ranch, set right in the heart of cowboy country, Montana, and not far from Yellowstone and little known but better Glacier Park. It’s a beautiful North American wilderness and if you’re lucky you might glimpse some of the local wildlife out on a ride, like eagles, bears, mountains lions and the very shy lynx.
Patty and Zack Wirth have been ranching and raising their children here for over 30 years – Zack is a 5th generation Montana rancher and works hard to preserve this life that he loves. Two of his daughters, Maria and Anna are also involved in the business, and are big followers of Parelli, so there’s also the opportunity to watch and learn about this training method. The other benefit to this is you can expect to ride very well schooled and responsive horses.
The family see themselves as true wranglers, there to teach you and show you the ropes – guests at the Rocking Z can join in on many different activities – cattle round-ups, barrel racing, team penning, roping – there’s even trips out to local rodeos in June, July and August which are not to be missed. And if you like the outdoors, pack trips are also easily organised. You can come here a beginner or advanced, and you’ll learn a thing or two about being a proper cowboy or cowgirl!
Horses at the Rocking Z – A great mix of Quarter Horse Crosses, Appaloosas, Mustangs, Thoroughbred Crosses, Arab Crosses, Welsh Crosses, Falabella,, Shetland Cross, plus a team of Belgians used for teaching driving.
Level of Riding & Pace – Beginner to Advanced.
Tack – Western style with a couple of English saddles. The bridles have Mecate style natural reins with slobber straps & natural Hackamores.
Weight Restriction – 18 stone / 114kg / 251 lbs.
Group Size at the Rocking Z – Maximum 12.
The rooms at the Rocking Z are spacious, ranch style decor with wooden beds and en suite. They have natural gas stoves and open onto a lovely porch area for great views of the Montana countryside.
Meals at the Rocking Z are wholesome, home cooked and delicious and eaten around large tables, family style with freshly baked breads. The kitchen is open and friendly and guests are encouraged to help themselves to tea, coffee and snacks.
Expect pancakes, bacon and eggs for breakfast, picnics on rides or if at the ranch, soups and salads. Dinners are things like brisket, steaks and lasagne with vegetables and potatoes or pasta or rice. When weather allows there’s also cook outs, with good old fashioned beans, meat and fresh bread all done over the fire in a Dutch oven, not forgetting fresh coffee.
The ranch is also very well set up to offer Gluten and Dairy free options.
There’s also lots of outdoor chill out space, a hot tub and a Saloon bar to practice lines dancing and have parties.
Our horse riding holidays are thoroughly researched – we consider all the elements that go towards making our horse riding holidays collection the best in the world. We check the quality of the horses, if they are fit for the job, well produced and looked after. We make sure the riding terrain is good going, the countryside is interesting and, for example, on Classic Dressage horse riding holidays, the arenas are in good condition. We make sure the accommodation, whether it’s a five star hotel, a farmhouse or camping, is clean and comfortable, and offers a great night’s sleep. The food is all important too – we take the time to make sure we tell you if it’s cordon bleu, home cooked, or regional and locally sourced – above all it has to be delicious, plentiful and nourishing. Last but not least, we choose the horse riding holidays that have the best hosts, who are friendly, warm and welcoming.
