SUMMARY OF THE TRIP top

The Welsh country to beach trail has been established as one of the best cross country riding trails in the UK, if not the world. With over 20 years of experience, Paul and Emily have fine tuned the adventure to make sure everyone enjoys the best riding in one of the most beautiful parts of Europe. The horses which are the local Welsh cob breed are built for the job, strong, sure footed, forward going and full of character.

Your journey takes you across Wales, from the Black Mountains to the Irish sea. The route passes through four mountain ranges – The Black Mountains, Mynydd Epynt, the Elan Valley and over Plynlimon before a final gallop on the beach near Aberystwyth.

The route takes mostly forgotten bridle-ways, some open moorland crossings and at times over private land which Paul and Emily have gained access.

There are long days in the saddle and often technical riding to be employed, therefore you should have good stamina, resolve and ride well with an independent seat.

The Welsh Country to Beach Trail is a wonderful choice for the competent adult rider looking to explore the stunning scenery and delights that Wales has to offer. The horses ensure a safe but exhilarating ride across some challenging terrain and will give you a memorable ride across green fields, over mountains and your final gallop along the beach. Some of the best trail riding around!

THE RIDING top

Welsh Country to Beach Trail: Horses – Welsh Cobs & Crosses, 14.2hh to 16.2hh. Although cob types, these Welsh ponies and horses are not uncomfortably wide or ‘ploddy’ as some might think, they are compact, intelligent and forward going.

They are ideally suited to the hilly terrain which includes open moorland, thick forests, picturesque mountain lanes and narrow mountain ridges and they will give you a thrilling gallop when the time is right. There is also the chance to jump logs and ditches and to enjoy the balance and strength of these admirable horses.

Welsh Country to Beach Trail: Level of Riding & Pace – Intermediate plus, a good level of fitness required as there are long hours in the saddle. You must be able to gallop in control in open countryside.

Tack – Mostly English GP saddles and some endurance saddles.

Welsh Country to Beach Trail: Weight Restriction – 85 kg / 13 stone / 186 lbs

If you weigh more than this but are an experienced rider and fit, please get in touch as there may be a horse to suit you.

Group Size – Maximum 13.

ACCOMMODATION top

At the beginning and end of your adventure, you stay at the family home, a traditional Welsh Longhouse called The Blaenau. It’s was built some 400 years ago, from stone from the quarry just upstream. It has been renovated to the highest standards, whilst retaining it’s traditional character. It was awarded 4 stars by the national tourist board called Visit Wales.

There’s plenty of hot water, Welsh blankets, fluffy pillows, 100% cotton linen and goose down duvets to make sure you sleep like a baby. The house is heated with a wood biomass boiler.

A comfortable lounge provides space for guests to relax and socialise in the evening, and both breakfast and dinner are taken in the garden room overlooking the stream at the back of the house.

Whilst out on the trail, there is a mix of accommodation from basic rooms at local pubs up to manor hotels, which have been chosen for a variety of reasons including location and charm.

Food here is important and there is a drive to use locally and ethically sourced produce wherever possible, like their very own Black Mountain lamb and other meats from Bryan George, a nationally-acclaimed butcher in Talgarth. In addition, their eggs come from the farm across the road and all their fruits and vegetables are from Coronation Grocers in Talgarth, delivered each week along with the milk and yoghurts by their neighbour John. They are also able to add to the table when in season from their own kitchen garden, raspberries, blackberries, lettuces, salad leaves, green beans and fresh herbs.

SAMPLE ITINERARY top

A world class trail covering almost the length and breadth of Wales. This holiday is a chance to experience historic, beautiful and undiscovered countryside on a trusty native horse. The challenging route passes through four mountain ranges (The Black Mountains, Mynydd Eppynt, the Elan Valley and over Plynlimon) and ends with a final gallop on the beach near Aberystwyth.

Saturday
Arrive after 5pm, settle in, meet the horses and get to know one another over a home-cooked dinner.

Sunday
You start with a local trail of around 12 miles, so that riders can get a feel for the horses and riding style. The group stops for lunch in a local pub, and afterwards heads up onto the mountain where the hill-riding really begins. You will then head back to Blaenau for a well-earned dinner. You are free to visit the local pub if you wish – this is approximately 1 mile from the farmhouse and we suggest you take a torch!

Monday to Wednesday
You ride in the direction of the coast. These days will see you tackle mile after mile of rolling farming country, fast open moors and high mountain commons – this is a horseman’s paradise! You overnight in comfortable accommodation ranging from fairly basic rooms above a pub to the historic Caer Beris manor hotel in Builth.

Thursday
This is literally a marathon riding day – 26 miles to the sea, crossing mountains with no real trail to follow! After a refreshing paddle in the waves and a gallop on the firm sand, you and the horses will be glad of the lift home, stopping enroute for dinner at the Blue Bell Inn.

Friday
After breakfast, bid farewell to your horse and fellow riders.

Carla Fugaccia on Wilds of Exmoor, UK

As you know we've had a fair bit of riding and riding holiday experience under our belts and I'd say the horses were right up there with the best I've ever ridden. Stephany encourages guests to try different horses throughout the holiday so out of 5 rides I tried out four horses. It's easy to
