The Hay Triangle short break is a spectacular and challenging three day guided trail ride, which takes you on a triangular route along the ‘Golden Horseshoe’ of the Black Mountains, up the magical Llanthony Valley and on to the fascinating ‘book town’ of Hay-on-Wye. You arrive Tuesday morning, and leave on Thursday afternoon, ending 2 nights away in local inns en-route. You will cover long distances of up to 5 hours riding per day. This trail suits riders looking for a challenge, offering plenty of fast-paced riding along mountain ridges and down through the valleys with fantastic scenery and the chance to explore a little further afield. Your luggage is transported each night to your next stop, while the horses spend the night in a field nearby.
The trail ride starts and ends at the family home of The Blaenau, an historical Welsh Longhouse and should you want to add in another pre or post the ride, this is possible either at the farmhouse if there is availability or at a local B&B.
This trail ride can also be run on different days for any private groups that might consider going as a group or friends or family over a long weekend, please enquire directly about dates and availability, minimum group size 4 up to maximum of 8 riders.
Hay Triangle Short Break holidays are a wonderful choice for the competent adult rider looking to explore the stunning scenery and delights that Wales has to offer. The horses ensure a safe but exhilarating ride across some challenging terrain and will give you a memorable gallop especially on the path home! Some of the best trail riding around!
Hay Triangle Short Break: Horses – Welsh Cobs & Crosses, 14.2hh to 16.2hh. Although cob types, these Welsh ponies and horses are not uncomfortably wide or ‘ploddy’ as some might think, they are compact, intelligent and forward going.
They are ideally suited to the hilly terrain which includes open moorland, thick forests, picturesque mountain lanes and narrow mountain ridges and they will give you a thrilling gallop when the time is right. There is also the chance to jump logs and ditches and to enjoy the balance and strength of these admirable horses.
Hay Triangle Short Breaks: Level of Riding & Pace – Intermediate plus, a good level of fitness required as there are long hours in the saddle.
Tack – Mostly English GP saddles and some endurance saddles.
Hay Triangle Short Breaks: Weight Restriction – 85 kg / 13 stone / 186 lbs
If you weigh more than this but are an experienced rider and fit, please get in touch as there may be a horse to suit you.
Group Size – Maximum 13.
Whilst out on the trail, you will stay in local Inns, which have been chosen for a variety of reasons including location and charm.

We have travelled the world testing a huge variety of horse riding holidays to make sure we offer you, our client, the best horse riding holiday experience possible.
Our horse riding holidays are thoroughly researched – we consider all the elements that go towards making our horse riding holidays collection the best in the world. We check the quality of the horses, if they are fit for the job, well produced and looked after. We make sure the riding terrain is good going, the countryside is interesting and, for example, on Classic Dressage horse riding holidays, the arenas are in good condition. We make sure the accommodation, whether it’s a five star hotel, a farmhouse or camping, is clean and comfortable, and offers a great night’s sleep. The food is all important too – we take the time to make sure we tell you if it’s cordon bleu, home cooked, or regional and locally sourced – above all it has to be delicious, plentiful and nourishing. Last but not least, we choose the horse riding holidays that have the best hosts, who are friendly, warm and welcoming.
It’s only when all these elements come together that we add a horse riding holiday into our hand-picked collection of horse riding holidays.
If you are having trouble finding exactly the right horse riding holiday for you from our horse riding holidays collection, please contact us directly using the form below and tell us in your own words what you would like to do and we will use our extensive knowledge to make sure we find that perfect horse riding holiday.
