SUMMARY OF THE TRIP top

The Mountains and Beach trail is a beautiful trail ride through the region of Catalan, from up in the Catalan Pyrenees down to the Mediterranean sea, where you can enjoy an incredible gallop on the Roses beach. On beautiful Spanish horses you can ride through the fantastic scenery of the Alt Empordà, Mediterranean forests, a stunning coastline and long sandy beaches. You will discover the little medieval villages, like Báscara or Crespià and pass by wheat fields, poppies and sunflowers. You’ll see and ride through pine forests and cork trees, filled with aromatic herbs to arrive at the end of the Pyrenees, where the mountains meet the sea. You leave the foothills of the Pyrenees and ride through the Alvera wine growing region, olive groves and vineyards of intense natural beauty. You will leave the mountains behind you because the rolling plains of the Empordà region wait for you and at the end, in the long curve of the Bay of Roses, miles of beach to gallop on! You will continue along the coastline, enjoying the sea, the cliffs and the breeze, to return to Can Muní through open fields and orchards.

The Two Beaches trail is ridden in a figure of eight, the first 3 days ride takes you through pine forests to
the bay of Roses, where you can canter along the water’s edge and splash in the waves with your horse. The route
then continues across the Aiguamolls de l’Emporda National Park, home to many aquatic birds, before heading
back through villages and fields to Can Muni continuing south to L’Estartit and the Ter river, beneath Montgrí Castle perched on the top of a coastal hill, and through Baix Ter Natural Park before returning to Can Muni.

The ride starts and ends in Can Muni, a sensitively restored farmhouse in the sleepy village of Vilopriu. Joan and Isabel who own and run the farmhouse, are a lovely couple who decided in the early 1990’s to work towards developing rural and equestrian tourism in this unique area of Spain. Joan graduated as a guide in France and he taught at the Catalan School of Agriculture. Whilst they look after our clients in the farmhouse, the rest of the team of qualified guides including Camille, Paloma, Gustavo & Xavier look after our clients out on the trails. They have wonderful equine experience gathered from working in other countries and they all speak good English, French and Spanish.

Catalonia is an area rich in history and culture and has a very distinctive feel. It still remains a relatively unknown corner of Spain and has a strong cultural identity of its own.

There are cottages with rooms and en-suite bathrooms, a kitchen and dining room and a guest house with seven rooms all with en-suite.

The area is lovely surrounded by fields and forests and there is also a nice swimming pool and large gardens to relax.

Out on the trail, the accommodation is a mix of small local hotels and guest houses, carefully selected for their character, comfort and cuisine.

You can expect a very high quality of Catalan cuisine, the area is known for fresh vegetables, fruit, game and fish. Breakfasts are continental style, lunches mostly packed in the saddle bags and include local cheeses, hams, salads, bread and wine. Dinners are 3 courses and reflect the local ingredients and Catalan style of cooking.

Spain Holidays Testimonials

Karen & Orlagh on Epona, Spain

Myself and Orlagh just wanted to thank you for the most wonderful break. The horses were fantastic and the instruction was excellent. Cati managed to work our lessons to suit two extremes - a fit and confident 13 year old wanting to improve her dressage and a very rusty and slightly nervous mum getting back
