SUMMARY OF THE TRIP top

The Winelands is a laid back riding holiday destination and is known for it’s character mountains, diversity of landscape and people and it’s conveniently situated just 45 minutes from the feel good vibe of the V&A Waterfront of Cape Town.

Louis has a good selection of horses and ponies of all heights and different levels at The Winelands, with many of them bred right on the farm. This means they can cater for many types of guests from total beginners right through to advanced riders.

An avid rider, Louis has a passion for people and sharing his extensive knowledge. Having spent time with great horsemen observing and understanding how they think, Louis has developed a rich insight and sensitivity towards horses and their personalities which he puts to good use managing a herd of horses suited to horseback holidays for riders of all skill levels. For Louis, gentle horsemanship is a way of life and it filters through into every part of Cape Winelands Riding.

Louis, a certified tour guide with a Bachelor of Science degree in natural sciences and post graduate studies in education, has an intimate knowledge of the region’s history and wildlife. After horses, his particular passion is birding and local wildlife and he is happiest when outdoors. Louis lives by the motto, “What we have is not ours but has been given to us to share. If we keep it to ourselves we will lose it.” As such, the desire to consistently learn, share and enlighten means the role of guiding and mentorship in the field comes naturally to Louis.

With Louis and his team’s relaxed approach, unfailing attention to detail and never hesitating to go the extra mile, guests leave Cape Winelands Riding feeling like they’ve holidayed with old friends and already planning their next trip.

The riding terrain is soft underfoot and mostly along old tractor routes through the vineyards, orchards and forests. There are mountain climbs with magnificent views as well as ample flat areas for comfortable canters as well as the odd full gallop for those wanting to experience the freedom on horseback to the full.

In addition to all the great riding options available on The Winelands holiday, it also makes a great base for touring round the Cape Town area and a good choice for non riding partners.

We have travelled the world testing a huge variety of horse riding holidays to make sure we offer you, our client, the best horse riding holiday experience possible.

Our horse riding holidays are thoroughly researched – we consider all the elements that go towards making our horse riding holidays collection the best in the world. We check the quality of the horses, if they are fit for the job, well produced and looked after. We make sure the riding terrain is good going, the countryside is interesting and, for example, on Classic Dressage horse riding holidays, the arenas are in good condition. We make sure the accommodation, whether it’s a five star hotel, a farmhouse or camping, is clean and comfortable, and offers a great night’s sleep. The food is all important too – we take the time to make sure we tell you if it’s cordon bleu, home cooked, or regional and locally sourced – above all it has to be delicious, plentiful and nourishing. Last but not least, we choose the horse riding holidays that have the best hosts, who are friendly, warm and welcoming.

It’s only when all these elements come together that we add a horse riding holiday into our hand-picked collection of horse riding holidays.

Horse Riding Holidays at The Winelands are part of the Zara’s Planet collection of Horse Riding Holidays South Africa.

Cian O’Connor on Ants Safari Collection, South Africa

There is a uniqueness to going on a safari on horseback that travelling in a Land Rover can never give you. Here you are at one with the wildlife, with nothing separating you from the huge variety of game that trots or canters alongside you or sometimes just regard you with a baleful eye from
