New for 2024 from Offbeat Safaris is the Masai Mara Lodge to Lodge Tailor Made ride. This ride is a truly indulgent way to explore the Masai Mara on horseback and staying in four luxurious safari camps, each chosen for the unique experience they offer – check out the “Accommodation” section for the full lowdown on them. Expect incredible game viewing from your horse (buffalo, elephant, lion & perhaps cheetah or leopard), game drives for the photographic opportunities, river crossings and long canters.

The landscape is typical of East Africa, open plains and grassland interspersed with bush, ideal for long canters and gallops. Nothing beats viewing the African wilderness from horseback – there is something thrilling about cantering alongside giraffe or wildebeest and blending into the bush with no car or sound of an engine for miles.

Your hosts are avid polo players and they have a yard of 80 mounts. You can expect the horses to be forward going and all of them have been tried for polo with even the best polo ponies going out on safari.

Alex Walker’s Serian “The Original”
Serian was the first of Alex’s camps, and it perfectly captures the essence of its name: meaning ‘peaceful, calm, serene’ in the Maasai language, it was designed to be a retreat from the bustle of contemporary life, and a chance to experience untamed Africa in traditional tented splendour.
It lies in the private Mara North Conservancy, and the beauty of this location is that only 10 other camps have access to it – so the feeling of having your own personal piece of Africa is a luxury that Serian Camp has in spades.
The thatched mess area has a stunning view over the Mara River and the Siria escarpment, and is the perfect spot to share a sundowner and stories of the dwindling day.
Join Adrian and Roisin by the fireside, and watch as the stars take over the sky. Comfy furniture, smooth wooden decks and an indoor fireplace give a warm feeling of home away from home – and the idea is to treat it like one: so sit back, put up your feet and succumb to the chilled ambiance and good company that constitutes Serian’s nightlife.
Serian consists of four vast marquees perched on beautiful hardwood decking. Each is unique in its own way, but all are furnished with elegant simplicity, complemented by countless thoughtful little personal touches. The beautiful bush bathrooms offer views over the river valley as you soak in your tub, and this openness simulates the delicious sensation of being outdoors. Airy and spacious, they include a shower as well as an enormous bath, twin basins, and a flushing toilet.

Angama Mara
Angama is inspired by the Swahili word for ‘suspended in mid-air’. Located high above the floor of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, Angama Mara is a remarkable safari lodge overlooking Kenya’s world famous Maasai Mara. Here guests will find a lodge where everything is as it ought to be: two intimate camps of just fifteen Tented Suites each, a private airfield and access to the Mara below, tailor-made safari days, and a famously warm Kenyan welcome.
The lodge’s remarkable setting overlooks what many safari travellers deem the finest game reserve on the continent, Kenya’s Maasai Mara. Angama Mara’s Tented Suites stretch out over two kopjes on the edge of the escarpment. The third kopje is immediately recognisable as the site where many of the most memorable scenes from Out of Africa were filmed.
The Tented Suites have been designed for guests’ comfort and are reminiscent of a classical African safari, each with a view as lovely as the next. Highly polished parquet floors, distinctive splashes of Maasai red, a handsome drinks cabinet, vanity with double basins, separate w/c, writing desk with ample charging points, WiFi, Africology amenities, a collection of East African books, a beautiful John Vogel woven screen and a butler’s lobby allowing for the discreet delivery of early morning tea and coffee, all add to the comfort and delight of guests in their luxury tents.

Offbeat Mara Camp
Offbeat Mara is a small, traditional safari camp, situated within the 74,000 acre Mara North Conservancy (MNC). The area is full of wildlife yet far from any other camp or lodge. MNC is only open to member camps and has a strict policy on game viewing etiquette. For these reasons guests at Offbeat Mara get a wholly exclusive experience that is otherwise becoming hard to find.
The heart of the camp is the main ‘mess’ tent with its bar, dining area, sitting room, fireplace, and forest deck. All the accommodation tents are en suite with flush loos and traditional hot safari showers.
Seven private tents are each en-suite with flush loos and traditional hot safari showers. Each tent has its own veranda and is carefully positioned to offer wonderful views as well as privacy.

Ol Seki Hemingways Mara
Set on a rocky promontory overlooking the Isupukiai River Valley, Ol Seki Hemingways Mara is a private luxury tented camp, which enjoys panoramic views across a wilderness teeming with game on the Naboisho Conservancy, north of the Mara Reserve. The area provides a rare opportunity to enjoy wildlife viewing in a pristine setting away from mass tourism. Ol Seki guides, who know every inch of the bush, lead guests throughout the Conservancy and onto the Mara plains to experience once-in-a-lifetime encounters with Kenya’s extraordinary wildlife.
Encompassing nine beautifully designed traditional safari tents, Ol Seki Hemingways Mara is an intimate oasis nestled amongst Cordia and Acacia trees, with views across the valley. Each spacious tent features a private deck, enabling guests to view animals and birds in their natural habitat, or simply enjoy the stunning sunsets, from the comfort of their tents.
The main area of camp comprises an extra large dining room and lounge where guests can relax in between game drives in comfortable armchairs and sofas with a gin and tonic overlooking a nearby watering hall. The baraza seating area offers a comfortable corner to enjoy a mid morning cappuccino. Other than private dining, all meals are served in the dining area. Sitting below the lounge and dining tent is the infinity swimming pool and adjacent sunset deck where guests can relax during the day and where we usually gather together in the early evening before supper.
Every tent sits on a private vantage point up on the rocky escarpment offering a 270-degree view of the bush from the large, comfortable beds. There are eight double/twin guest tents and, following a major refurbishment, the tents now feature glass sliding doors opening onto a large private terrace as well as indoor and outdoor showers and a large bath tub with views out onto the plains. The lobby area into the tent features a small mini bar as well as a pop hatch for early morning tea and coffee orders.

Food throughout the safari is of a very high quality and you can expect 3 course, candle lit dinners every evening, with plenty of good wine.

Horse Riding Holidays at Offbeat Safaris Masai Mara Lodge To Lodge Tailor Made are part of the Zara’s Planet Horse Riding Holidays Kenya collection.

We have travelled the world testing a huge variety of horse riding holidays to make sure we offer you, our client, the best horse riding holiday experience possible.

Our horse riding holidays are thoroughly researched – we consider all the elements that go towards making our horse riding holidays collection the best in the world. We check the quality of the horses, if they are fit for the job, well produced and looked after. We make sure the riding terrain is good going, the countryside is interesting and, for example, on Classic Dressage horse riding holidays, the arenas are in good condition. We make sure the accommodation, whether it’s a five star hotel, a farmhouse or camping, is clean and comfortable, and offers a great night’s sleep. The food is all important too – we take the time to make sure we tell you if it’s cordon bleu, home cooked, or regional and locally sourced – above all it has to be delicious, plentiful and nourishing. Last but not least, we choose the horse riding holidays that have the best hosts, who are friendly, warm and welcoming.

It’s only when all these elements come together that we add a horse riding holiday into our hand-picked collection of horse riding holidays.

Day 1
This morning you will either be collected from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport or if you have arrived earlier, from your Nairobi hotel, and transferred to Wilson Airport for your 10am flight to Mara North in the Masai Mara. Your guides will meet you and drive you to Serian Camp, set up on the banks of the Mara River adjacent to a teeming hippo pool. Lunch will be served and you will have a little time to relax before meeting your horses and setting off on your first gentle evening ride (about 2 hours).
Overnight Serian Camp

Day 2
This morning we will begin the day with an early morning ride, crossing the Mara River for the first time and returning to camp for a light breakfast. After breakfast a game drive will be on offer. Driving provides better photographic opportunities than from a horse and exploring more of this northern part of the Mara has much to offer. We will return in time for lunch and a siesta before setting off on an afternoon ride. We return to camp in good time to shower and maybe set off in the vehicles once more for a sun downer and a short night game drive before supper.
Overnight Serian Camp

Day 3
This morning we will leave camp after breakfast at about 9am, heading south towards the park boundary where we meet the river again at one of the famous wildebeest crossings. We will cross the river and head southwest across the Mara Triangle, meeting the car with our picnic lunch at around 12:30. After lunch and a siesta we set off at about 4pm and ascend the Soit Olololol Escarpment. We reach the spectacular Angama Lodge by about 5.30pm on the edge of the escarpment and spend the night overlooking the whole Mara ecosystem.
Overnight Angama

Day 4
We descend the escarpment after breakfast at about 9am and ride across to the same wildebeest crossing on the river. We head in a westerly direction and descend into the enchanting Olare Orok Valley with a picnic lunch and siesta between 12:30 – 3.30pm. Reaching Offbeat Mara camp that afternoon, in time for tea. There should also be time to do an evening game drive and sundowners, before supper under the stars.
Overnight Offbeat Mara Camp

Day 5
Here we will have a full day of exploring this glorious area on horseback, car and possibly on foot. You will have excellent photo opportunities, getting close to buffalo, elephant, lion and maybe cheetah or leopard.
Overnight Offbeat Mara Camp

Day 6
Our third moving day and we leave camp in good time as it the longest ride of the trip covering nearly 50kms. Setting off at 7am, we ride through the morning, stopping for a picnic breakfast along the way. We continue to cover ground with long canters before we break again for lunch and a siesta after reaching the Ol Kinyei Conservancy. That afternoon we will reach our last camp, Hemingways Ol Seki, at the southern edge of the Loita Plains.
Overnight Hemingways Ol Seki

Day 7
After an early wake up we will set off for a morning ride before returning to camp for a light breakfast. We will then set out for a game drive and beautiful walk up the nearby hill called Oloiburmut, returning to camp for a lunch and a siesta. At around 4pm we will drive or ride to visit the local Masai village.
Overnight Hemingways Ol Seki

Day 8
This is our last morning ride before saying goodbye to your horses. After a final breakfast you will drive to the airstrip and fly back to Nairobi at around 11am, landing into Wilson at 12noon. We will organise for a taxi to pick you up and take you to a hotel day room (included), before taking you on to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in time for your evening flight home, or your onward destination.
