Borana Safari Lodge offers a luxury riding safari holiday in Kenya – it’s a unique and very special ranch that provides upmarket, private accommodation and a very personal, discrete service by the owners. This 35,000-acre ranch is a haven for lion, elephant, Jackson’s hartebeest, buffalo and huge herds of antelope.
Borana Safari Lodge is situated at the foot of Mount Kenya, just 16 miles from the equator and 6,500 feet above sea level, Borana’s favourable geographical situation favours a very wide diversity of wildlife. It’s easy to see why famous celebrities love this place – from the VIP meet and greet at Nairobi airport to the discrete but informal service at each of the lodges, this family run ranch will cater and personalise itineraries to suit everyone’s needs and great for families.
Borana Safari Lodge is on the edge of the Samangua valley in Laikipia, about 4 hours’ drive north of Nairobi. Owned and run by the Dyer family, this stone and thatch lodge is a supremely comfortable, stylish, yet relaxed. An unaffected bush home, with swimming pool, verandas and panoramic views over the wilderness towards Mount Kenya.
Borana Safari Lodge has a very good selection of horses, from polo ponies and thoroughbreds for experienced riders, to tough crossbreeds for families with children. Riding is varied and can include morning, evening or full day picnic rides, even overnight stays in other lodges, plus the opportunity to join in on some friendly polo chukkas.
From the Borana Safari Lodge there is plenty of game to see from herds of elephant that come to drink at the waterhole below the lodge, buffalo hiding in the thick, shady bush, lion resting under acacia trees and much, much more on the open plains.
And this is a place you can take a non-riding partner, as there’s plenty to do other than ride – game drives, guided walks, visits to local Masai or Samburu tribes, fishing, hiking, mountain biking and let’s not forget chilling out at the pool!
Borana Safari Lodge was recently awarded Global Ecosphere Retreat® (GER) status, one of only ten properties to achieve the standard worldwide.
The Long Run’s GER® standard is considered to be ‘one of the world’s best standards for privately protected areas’ Dr Jeff Langholz. It is recognised by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) and is one of the most rigorous sustainability audits in the hospitality industry. It takes into account every aspect of the 4Cs; Community, Culture, Conservation and Commerce and is not only about businesses mitigating their negative environmental impact, but about positively impacting the well-being of the planet and people.
The association and guidance with GER has led Borana Safari Lodge to become one of the most sustainable lodges in East Africa. The focus is not just about solar panels and recycling (although these are two very strong areas within the Lodge), it ensures that both community and culture thrive in a conservation environment.
Horses – A mix of Thoroughbreds, Ethiopians and Arabs.

In the sitting area in the main lodge sofas surround a huge fireplace with picture windows looking onto the valley below.
Meals are served at a huge rosewood table in the dining room. All food is freshly prepared in the kitchen with vegetables and produce from the farm, freshly squeezed juice from the orchard and wines from around the world. Roses and lilies grown at Kisima decorate and perfume the rooms.
We have travelled the world testing a huge variety of horse riding holidays to make sure we offer you, our client, the best horse riding holiday experience possible.
Our horse riding holidays are thoroughly researched – we consider all the elements that go towards making our horse riding holidays collection the best in the world. We check the quality of the horses, if they are fit for the job, well produced and looked after. We make sure the riding terrain is good going, the countryside is interesting and, for example, on Classic Dressage horse riding holidays, the arenas are in good condition. We make sure the accommodation, whether it’s a five star hotel, a farmhouse or camping, is clean and comfortable, and offers a great night’s sleep. The food is all important too – we take the time to make sure we tell you if it’s cordon bleu, home cooked, or regional and locally sourced – above all it has to be delicious, plentiful and nourishing. Last but not least, we choose the horse riding holidays that have the best hosts, who are friendly, warm and welcoming.
It’s only when all these elements come together that we add a horse riding holiday into our hand-picked collection of horse riding holidays.
Horse Riding Holidays at the Borana Safari Lodge are part of the Zara’s Planet Horse Riding Holidays Kenya collection.
Please Ask About
Borana is a great base for a special occasion and can easily be combined with a beach holiday at the exclusive Manda Bay on the Lamu Archipelago of Kenya. We can also plan a visit to the Masai Mara and combine a camping expedition with Borana.
Itineraries are tailored to each client so please call or email to discuss. If you are going for a week with a group or as a family a good itinerary would be to spend 2-3 nights at Laragai House on the ranch followed by a night in a fly camp, followed by 3 nights at Borana.
