Voted in the ‘Top 10 Luxury Dude Ranches in North America’ by Forbes Traveler Magazine, Siwash Lake Ranch is a ’boutique’ style, working ranch offering a really upmarket horse riding holiday in Canada – family owned and located in the heart of British Columbia’s cowboy country. This place is something special, perfect for a romantic getaway, or family breaks with a difference – this is a genuine wilderness paradise.
This has to be one of the best ranches in North America – surrounded by 80,000 acres of pristine British Columbia wilderness, the horses and wildlife thrive among the natural grasslands, forests, lakes and rivers – provides you with some of the most breath taking trail riding known to man.
The great thing about Siwash Lake Ranch is that they really do cater for beginners and advanced riders – the beauty of being an advanced rider here is after a couple of days being guided by an experienced wrangler, you are given free rein to ride out yourself to explore this amazing wilderness.
Other days at Siwash Lake Ranch you might want to try your hand at fly-fishing for rainbow trout on the lake or a half day learning to survive in the wilderness. As you can imagine this place also lends itself well to hiking and mountain biking and closer to home, you can swim to your hearts delight in the lake, play a game of badminton or shoot some clays. Frankly, you don’t even have to ride to have a great active holiday here, which makes it the ideal place to bring non riding family or friends.
Kids are welcomed and they can expect to enjoy as much attention as the adults participating in things like – horse care, animal tracking, wilderness survival training and shelter building, orienteering, arts and crafts, scavenger hunts, nature walks, fort building and outdoor games, all of course depending on the weather, group dynamics, and the ages of the children involved.
Siwash Lake Ranch also offers guests the possible sightings of Canada’s best known wild animals, and includes: moose, deer, black bear, cougar, coyote, wolf, beaver, porcupine and pine martin – the list goes on. Whilst out and about with your guides you’ll learn how to identify scat, tracks and other signs, which may bring you closer to meeting these wild animals face to face!
The Siwash Lake Ranch continues to embark on nature programmes and recently completed a conservation project on the lake in partnership with Duck’s Unlimited Canada, which has enhanced the already thriving eco-system. Avid bird watchers can observe many species including Sandhill cranes, water fowl, eagles and other prey birds, woodpeckers, hummingbirds, chickadees, nuthatches, and grosbeaks, to name a few, as well as many precious song birds. All in all Siwash doesn’t get much better at providing guests the natural environment to enjoy Canada’s finest!
Latest awards to the Siwash Lake Ranch include becoming ‘Conde Nast Johansens’ approved and this summer ‘USA Today’ ranked Siwash in the top 10 guest ranches of North America. In addition, they are also a member of the new ‘Magnificent 7 Collection’, which is an elite group of Western Canada’s best luxury wilderness lodges.

An exclusive, luxury ranch, blending rustic with the refined – each suite is distinctively different and tastefully decorated with antiques in a ranch style. Most bedrooms have a queen or king size bed with French doors leading onto a private balcony or a sitting area with a glass-fronted wood-burning stove, and a luxurious en suite bathroom. Family suites have a queen or king bed and two single beds.
Siwash Lake Ranch added this new camp recently and redefined the hottest new trend in high-end travel “Glamping”. There is no better way for guests to get close to nature, while still enjoying creature comforts, than to stay within one of these ultra-luxe natural shelters with the surrounding pristine wilderness all around.
The safari style tents are a hark back to the era of Hemingway’s Africa and include two rooms, canvas-clad suites have a master bedroom with a curtained doorway, which when tied back and offer sweeping views of the forest, meadows and lake beyond right from the comfort of the king-size bed. Each tent offers 1,000 square feet of living space, each with a furnished sundeck, hardwood floor, and AC power.
Specially designed for couples and singles who love their space and privacy, right up to larger families with five members, the canvas cabins have an interior doorway that leads from the master bedroom into a separate living room with a fireplace, pull out sofa bed, and an alcove with two single beds. They have specially crafted an en-suite bathroom within the tent (indoor plumbing, including a flush toilet!) and a smoked-glass French door leads from the bathroom into a lovely indoor/outdoor shower cocooned by overhanging fir boughs.
A rain-style shower faucet sits atop cedar wood walls, with blue sky above. And to keep you warm, there’s In-floor radiant heating throughout the bathroom into the shower floor – one of the many finer details that make Siwash such a special space to stay.
The food at the Siwash Lake Ranch is wonderful and you start the day with a ‘wake-up tray’ placed by your door, brimming with home baked muffins and freshly brewed tea or coffee, a hearty breakfast follows in the dining room with lunches, served outside whenever possible, featuring homemade soups, pastas, salads, and breads. The evening meal kicks off with the chef’s daily hors d’oeuvre, presented on the sun deck or fireside followed by a three-course dinner, using fresh, organic and locally sourced ingredients where possible.
In fact, some of the food will be from the ranch itself and include organic eggs, beef, pork and salad greens, and other delights will be from the British Columbia region and include wild trout, salmon and venison.

There is no set itinerary as such, you can expect to spend your first day learning the lay of the land, with natural western horsemanship and wilderness tips being high on the agenda.
After that you can ride as much or as little as you like for the rest of your stay – on miles of trails that meander out from the ranch through 80,000 acres of pristine rangeland.
One of Siwash’s unique features is that after some introductory riding with a guide, and demonstrating a basic understanding of the wilderness setting, experienced riders can actually ride out on ride on their own, unescorted if they choose.
Otherwise, a guide is always available for small group rides (maximum 6 guests) but with no boring nose-to-tail rides!
We have travelled the world testing a huge variety of horse riding holidays to make sure we offer you, our client, the best horse riding holiday experience possible.
Our horse riding holidays are thoroughly researched – we consider all the elements that go towards making our horse riding holidays collection the best in the world. We check the quality of the horses, if they are fit for the job, well produced and looked after. We make sure the riding terrain is good going, the countryside is interesting and, for example, on Classic Dressage horse riding holidays, the arenas are in good condition. We make sure the accommodation, whether it’s a five star hotel, a farmhouse or camping, is clean and comfortable, and offers a great night’s sleep. The food is all important too – we take the time to make sure we tell you if it’s cordon bleu, home cooked, or regional and locally sourced – above all it has to be delicious, plentiful and nourishing. Last but not least, we choose the horse riding holidays that have the best hosts, who are friendly, warm and welcoming.
It’s only when all these elements come together that we add a horse riding holiday into our hand-picked collection of horse riding holidays.
