SUMMARY OF THE TRIP top

This Bush & Beach Trail is a ’boutique’ style horse riding holiday, very personal, where you are attentively cared for and treated as part of the family. The riding is on wonderfully schooled, fit Australian bred Arabs, each treasured by their owner Kathy Holtrust.

On the Bush & Beach Trail Horse Riding Holiday you will be staying on a wonderful NSW Mid North Coast hinterland property named ‘Kerewong’ which is spread over 60 acres of land in the Lorne Valley. This intimate farm, owned and run by Kathy Holtrust, an experienced endurance rider, is adjacent to the Kerewong State Forest and has impressive views across the valleys to Comboyne Mountain.

Bush & Beach trails extend across 50,000 acres of the forest, renowned for its wildlife. The landscape is diverse and incredibly beautiful with undulating hills, silvery eucalypti forests and pockets of rainforest. Clients arrive from around the world to visit Kerewong, to experience riding through the wonderful bushland and beaches of Australia.

SAMPLE ITINERARY top

Over five days on the Bush & Beach Trail we ride across the beautiful and diverse landscape of Australia’s NSW Mid North Coast. We select routes that give a good variety of scenery and landscape. There’s lots of opportunities to see wildlife in their natural habitat both during rides and on the horse farm.

We follow quiet little horse trails, 4WD Tracks, Fire Trails and Forestry Roads throughout the State Forest including Eucalypti forests, pockets of rain forests, waterfalls, creek crossings, historic timber railway line, special rocks and trees, climb up and descend along steep ridges and pass through rolling farmlands.

We visit a local winery, cafes and a Macadamia Farm to taste the unique products from this region and ride along the Pacific Ocean on long deserted beaches.

We climb up to the picturesque Comboyne Plateau, an elevated farming region of green rolling hills, to take in the breathtaking views to the Pacific Ocean.

Five day rides on the Bush & Beach Trail with six nights accommodation at Kerewong Lodge and Cabin.

DAY 1

Arrival at Kerewong Lodge & Horse Riding Farm in the late afternoon. Transfer from Port Macquarie Airport or Kendall Railway Station (fixed times). Dinner with your hosts and co-riders and discussing the week program.

DAY 2

(3 hours riding): Introductory Forest Ride through the hilly terrain of the Kerewong State Forest with tall eucalypti forests and pockets of rainforest. Stop at a creek side picnic ground in the middle of the forest for lunch. Wildlife we may encounter on our rides and on the farm are Wallabies, Goannas and many bird species including Black Cockatoos.

DAY 3

(5 hours riding): Ride to impressive Comboyne Mountain (670 m), which peak can be seen from Kerewong Lodge. Magnificent 360 degree view at the top. Horses and riders enjoy a well deserved lunch break at the peak, before descending back home.

DAY 4

(5-6 hours riding): Long day ride, starting along a historic timber railway line, to local Bago Vineyards. Creek crossings, adventurous steep descent and fantastic long gallops. On arrival taste the local produce while looking over the vineyards. Transfer back to Kerewong.

DAY 5

(2 hours riding): Fantastic beach horse riding, galloping along the Pacific Ocean. Watch out for dolphins in the waves and a close encounter with kangaroos. Lunch in the dunes or at the local Macadamia Farm Café. Transfer home by horse trailer.

DAY 6

(6 hours riding): Farmland horse ride to the beautiful green rolling and fertile farmland of the Comboyne Plateau. On clear days views to the Pacific Ocean. In the evening farewell dinner.

DAY 7

Departure after breakfast. Transfer to Kendall Railway station or Port Macquarie airport, with optional stop at Port Macquarie Koala Hospital (only included with departure transfer to Port Macquarie).

Itinerary is subject to Forestry activities, weather & terrain conditions.

We make sure the riding terrain is good going, the countryside is interesting and, for example, on Classic Dressage horse riding holidays, the arenas are in good condition. We make sure the accommodation, whether it’s a five star hotel, a farmhouse or camping, is clean and comfortable, and offers a great night’s sleep. The food is all important too – we take the time to make sure we tell you if it’s cordon bleu, home cooked, or regional and locally sourced – above all it has to be delicious, plentiful and nourishing.
