SUMMARY OF THE TRIP top

Offbeat Safari Masai Mara Safari  is a very well known & extremely popular horse riding safari travelling across the Masai Mara in Kenya in the Great Rift Valley offering adventurous riding in remote wilderness areas. The 10 night Masai Mara rides finish at your hosts’, very impressive colonial home, Deloraine and stretch as far as Masai land and Laikipia – it’s quite possible to ride on this extraordinary safari for 200 miles without seeing a fencepost, giving riders ample opportunity to view the most wonderful & varied game.

On Offbeat Safaris Masai Mara safari  the landscape is typical of East Africa, open plains and grassland interspersed with bush, ideal for long canters and gallops. Nothing beats viewing the African wilderness from horseback – there is something thrilling about cantering alongside giraffe or wildebeest and blending into the bush with no car or sound of an engine for miles.

Your hosts are are avid polo players and they have a yard of 80 mounts. You can expect the horses to be forward going and all of them have been tried for polo with even the best polo ponies going out on safari. You will spend about 4-6 hours in the saddle covering 20 -30 miles per day, with picnic lunches carried in the saddle bags.

One of the most popular of  Offbeat Safaris Masai Mara is that of the ‘Great Wildebeest Migration’ which can be experienced anywhere through from July to September. Guests can expect to see vast herds of game traversing the great plains of the Masai Mara, a real wonder and privilege to see. There are limited dates on which guests can join this exciting adventure, and it books out well in advance – it’s always a good idea to plan this trip at least a year in advance.

Horse Riding Holidays at Offbeat Safaris Masai Mara are part of the Zara’s Planet Horse Riding Holidays Kenya collection.

We have travelled the world testing a huge variety of horse riding holidays to make sure we offer you, our client, the best horse riding holiday experience possible.

Our horse riding holidays are thoroughly researched – we consider all the elements that go towards making our horse riding holidays collection the best in the world. We check the quality of the horses, if they are fit for the job, well produced and looked after. We make sure the riding terrain is good going, the countryside is interesting and, for example, on Classic Dressage horse riding holidays, the arenas are in good condition. We make sure the accommodation, whether it’s a five star hotel, a farmhouse or camping, is clean and comfortable, and offers a great night’s sleep. The food is all important too – we take the time to make sure we tell you if it’s cordon bleu, home cooked, or regional and locally sourced – above all it has to be delicious, plentiful and nourishing. Last but not least, we choose the horse riding holidays that have the best hosts, who are friendly, warm and welcoming.

It’s only when all these elements come together that we add a horse riding holiday into our hand-picked collection of horse riding holidays.

SAMPLE ITINERARY top

Offbeat Safaris Masai Mara & Deloraine

DAY 1

You will be collected from your Nairobi Hotel or directly from the airport and transferred to Wilson Airport for a 10.30 charter or 10am schedule flight to Siana Springs. It is a beautiful flight passing over the fertile Kikuyu Highlands before reaching the Great Rift Valley. We fly across the volcano studded floor of the Rift before reaching the Loita Hills and Siana Springs Air strip. You will be met by your guide and there will be an hour’s drive to camp. We reach our camp in a grove of acacia trees by a small stream at the southern edge of the Loita Plains at Olare Lamun (the rhino salt lick) in time for lunch. There will be an evening ride. Overnight Olare Lamun.

DAY 2

A full day to explore this remote area with abundant game. Drives, rides and walks may be taken from camp. Overnight Olare Lamun.

DAY 3

Our first moving day and we break camp in good time as it is the longest ride of the trip covering nearly 50kms. We ride across rolling open plains and the game generally becomes more plentiful as we approach the Mara ecosystem. We should see herds of zebra, topi, giraffe, wildebeest, gazelle and there is a good chance of seeing elephant and buffalo as well. We reach our camp on the edge of the Masai Game Reserve on the Olare Orok lugga late afternoon. From camp we are likely to hear lion and hyena at night and the abundance of game is apparent everywhere. Overnight Olare Orok.

DAY 4 & 5

Two full days of morning and evening rides from camp with the option of driving into the game park for some good photographic opportunities - we should see lion, elephant and buffalo. Overnight Olare Orok.

DAY 6

Another moving day. We head west across the Mara plains and reach the Mara River on the Park boundary. We hopefully ford the river (unless in complete flood) at one of the famous wildebeest crossings and then head south west across the Mara Triangle where we have our picnic lunch before ascending the Soit Olololol Escarpment to reach our camp in a forest glade overlooking the whole Mara ecosystem. Overnight Soit Olololol.

DAY 7

We ride South West along the top of the escarpment enjoying glorious views to the east on excellent going for the horses. We hopefully see the beautiful Mrs Ross’ and Schalows Turaco as well as much plains game. We descend the escarpment on foot along a rocky cattle track and have a picnic lunch under some acacias at the foot of the escarpment. After lunch we ride back through the Mara Triangle at the foot of the escarpment before ascending on a game trail. Many bachelor buffalo herds are a feature of the afternoon. Overnight Soit Olololol.

DAY 8

We descend the escarpment again and ride across to the same wildebeest crossing on the river. We head in a North Western direction and after lunch, we find our final camp-site set up on the banks of the Mara River. Close by there are some hippo pools and their grunting at night is a special feature of this camp. Overnight Mara River.

DAY 9

Leaving camp after breakfast with a picnic lunch we drive to Deloraine via the impressive tea growing area of Kericho. We arrive in time for tea and an evening walk around the beautiful garden. Overnight Deloraine.

DAY 10

An early morning ride before breakfast is optional. Also day trips to either Lake Nakuru or Bogoria famous for their flamingos can be arranged with a picnic lunch. Overnight Deloraine.

DAY 11

Transfer by private charter to Nairobi. Leaving after lunch.

Kenya Holidays Testimonials

Harriet on Gordie’s Masai Mara, Kenya

Gordie and all of his crew went out of their way to make sure every detail of the ride was superb. The riding was not for the faint hearted but it was well suited to our group.
