SUMMARY OF THE TRIP top

Lolldaiga Ranch sits at the foot of Mount Kenya and is described by many as the ‘most beautiful ranch in Africa’. It is an unrivalled 49,000 acre safari wilderness, which offers some of the best riding and game viewing country in Africa.

Your hosts at Lolldaiga Ranch are Clinton and Elizabeth who own and manage Olepangi Farm, which is your first stop before heading into the Lolldaiga reserve for game viewing.

Olepangi is a 120 Acre farm, blessed with views, a river and some spectacular neighbouring properties. Apart from visiting it as part of the Lolldaiga Ranch safari, it’s a beautiful place to stay in it’s own right. The farm straddles a unique ecozone where most of the finest roses in the world are supplied to the markets of Europe, grown in the wild hinterland of Northern Kenya.

Protected by a low-lying elephant fence, from the farm you can see wildlife across the river on Ole Naishu on most days and includes herds of zebra and impala. Each night you may hear the haunting calls of the hyena as they go out to hunt and once every three weeks, you may also hear lion rutting.

The farm also enjoys stunning, uninterrupted long views north to the Lolldaiga Hills and sublime views south to Mt Kenya. On clear days, you can look west to marvel at the full Aberdare mountain range and the Laikipia plains.

There is so much you can do at Lolldaiga Ranch and when you arrive your hosts will help you settle into one of the beautiful guest cottages and help you plan what you would like to do each day, which includes:

  • Day Rides – enjoy a ride in the surrounding area or a picnic ride running along the Ole Naishu border.
  • Riding Lessons – there is an all-weather arena where you can have lessons, from beginners to advanced, plus polo lessons.
  • Bush polo – they have their own bush polo pitch.
  • Walks around the farm, either on your own or with a guide.
  • Archery & Croquet.
  • A School Visit – Clinton & Elizabeth have close links with their community and the local school.
  • Ol Pejeta Conservancy – Visit a Rhino sanctuary, a Chimpanzee enclosure and various other community/wildlife.
  • If you are not joining the Lolldaiga safari you can still go for a day ride or drive into the reserve.

THE RIDING top

Lolldaiga Ranch Horses – A wonderful set of 15 quality safari horses, from 14.2hh plus on height, mostly Thoroughbreds and crosses. Clinton also has a separate string of fabulous polo ponies you can ride if you want a go at polo.

Tack – English style wintec synthetic saddles and mostly snaffle bridles.

Weight Restriction – 16 stone / 102 kg / 224 lbs

Lolldaiga Ranch Group Size – Maximum 7

ACCOMMODATION top

There are lovely guest cottages at the Lolldaiga Ranch, all very comfortable with stunning views. Each of them house quirky antique furniture and beautiful objects d’art, which have been collected by Clinton and Elizabeth as they travelled the world.

There are four double and one twin cottages all en suite with antique four-poster beds from the British Raj and fine old Persian carpets. Those who make an early booking may be able to secure the fabulous “Round House”, which has 360 degree views over the ranch, a floating balcony, private lounge and bedroom loft with star-bed and indoor/outdoor private bathroom.

There is a main meeting area, called the “Party House” which is perched on multiple levels and hangs over the Ngishishi River with stunning views to the hills in the north. It houses the dining room, bar and lounge with a large stone fireplace.

While out on the Lolldaiga Ranch safari, there is the option to stay in a moving fly camp or at a cedar cottage.

The food at Lolldaiga Ranch is delicious – their Head Chef Samson trained in France and previously worked at a number of top lodges in Kenya before opting for what he thought would be a more relaxed life at Olepangi!

Together with Samson, Clinton & Elizabeth’s main aim is to create delicious and interesting menus using local, fresh produce. There is a mix of Western and African dishes including dishes like Sakuma Wiki, a traditional Maize flour and spinach food, eaten across East Africa.

Guests at Lolldaiga Ranch are also encouraged to join Samson in the kitchen to swap recipes and see what he creates day to day – this can be a really fun activity!

We have travelled the world testing a huge variety of horse riding holidays to make sure we offer you, our client, the best horse riding holiday experience possible.

Our horse riding holidays are thoroughly researched – we consider all the elements that go towards making our horse riding holidays collection the best in the world. We check the quality of the horses, if they are fit for the job, well produced and looked after. We make sure the riding terrain is good going, the countryside is interesting and, for example, on Classic Dressage horse riding holidays, the arenas are in good condition. We make sure the accommodation, whether it’s a five star hotel, a farmhouse or camping, is clean and comfortable, and offers a great night’s sleep. The food is all important too – we take the time to make sure we tell you if it’s cordon bleu, home cooked, or regional and locally sourced – above all it has to be delicious, plentiful and nourishing. Last but not least, we choose the horse riding holidays that have the best hosts, who are friendly, warm and welcoming.

It’s only when all these elements come together that we add a horse riding holiday into our hand-picked collection of horse riding holidays.

Horse Riding Holidays at the Lolldaiga Ranch are part of the Zara’s Planet Horse Riding Holidays Kenya collection.

Please Ask About

  • Climbing Ololokwe – From it’s flat top the views to northern Kenya are sublime. Hike up the steep slope through the high altitude forest full of acacia trees, pencil cedar, cycad palms and podocarpus trees. Mt. Ololokwe summit is 2000m. On one side is the Mathews Range with its Warges Peak (2600m) majestically standing out. On the other are expansive plains extending to Nyambene Hills in the southeast.
  • Namunyak Conservation area – a Samburu community run conservancy that acts as a dispersal area for the wildlife from Samburu and Meru Parks. Our visit to this conservancy goes along way to help encourage the local people to conserve and protect their environment.
  • Ngare Ndare Forest Walk – from Olepangi Farm it is possible to visit to the nearby Ngare Ndare Forest, where you can enjoy a private swim in the jade forest pools of this forest on the slopes of Mount Kenya. Accompanied by your guide, you will walk along a forest track to a glorious pool filled by a high waterfall. After a bracing swim you can either continue walking or drive along the forest track until you reach the elevated canopy walkway. Eighty feet up, this wood and wire suspension bridge extends for about 400m beneath the forest canopy. From on high you will experience surround-sound birdcall and the tranquility of the forest. The walkway ends at a wooden deck 30 feet high, where you can relax and enjoy a view of the river from this elevated vantage point. Elephants and buffalo frequently come here to drink and wallow, and lucky guests may see leopard and even the occasional lion.

SAMPLE ITINERARY top

DAY 1

Arrive by road to Olepangi Farm, driving through the beautiful Kikuyu Highlands, arriving in time for a hearty lunch. Spend the afternoon as you like. Perhaps a visit to see our donkeys and tortoises, explore the farm or just relax ready for sundowners, followed by dinner down on the river by a roaring fire. With luck we’ll have a magnificent night of glorious stars and “whoops” from the local hyenas.

DAY 2

This morning, after a leisurely breakfast on our breakfast deck, guest who wish can go on a community walk with our local guide following the Timau River. This takes you through surrounding farmland and forest ending at a beautiful waterfall only accessible by foot. There is also the option for a gentler walk around Olepangi Farm spotting birdlife, flora and fauna. After lunch beneath the shade of an impressive fig tree we will go out on an orientation ride to match all riders with their horses for the safari. In the evening we will set up a telescope to view the magical African sky with hot chocolates around our fire pit.

DAY 3

Early risers can watch the sunrise over the mountain. We’ll ride out from our farm after breakfast to Lolldaiga Hills Ranch, often referred to as the most beautiful ranch in all of Kenya. It is a great privilege that we have use of this private ranch for it is a wonder to behold. We’ll take our time enjoying the scenery and wildlife along the way. We’ll have a good chance of seeing elephant, giraffe, buffalo and, with luck, many other species. We’ll arrive in time for a late lunch followed by an evening game drive to our phenomenal sundowner spot.

DAY 4

Wake up to a cup of tea or coffee in bed, followed by a light breakfast of toast and muesli. We’ll then head off into a different direction enjoying the quiet and tranquility of this 49,000 acre private game reserve. Depending on the season this may involve some cantering through the open plains or pushing-on through seas of tall grass following giraffe, zebra, antelope, elephant, buffalo; whatever's out there. We will break for a bush lunch in a shady spot giving both riders and horses plenty of time to relax. There’s always some wine on offer to encourage a little nap before our afternoon ride back to base. The afternoon ride is deliberately slower-paced and it's a good opportunity to ask questions and take photographs. The bird-life is some of the best in the world and towards sunset there is often elephant interaction to enjoy. We will return to camp and go out on an evening drive to see what is around before dark.

DAY 5

This morning we will get onto the horses at first light to make the most of the cool air and greater game activity. We will stop for a break after about two hours riding for a bit of a re-fuel before making our way back to camp in time for showers and a chance to relax before lunch. This afternoon we will explore on foot, going down to the eastern part of the ranch where caves with ancient rock art can be found. Sundowners will be ready after the walk returning to camp for dinner and stories around the campfire.

DAY 6

For your last ride we're going to take you through different country, making our way through clouds of grass to plains dotted with cedar trees. While passing through woodlands, there's a possibility of finding big game again. Our pace may increase as we break out onto the plains; perhaps disturbing troops of baboons or cantering alongside giraffes or cape buffalo. Back at Olepangi Farm, there's time to shower before lunch. Spend the afternoon relaxing with a book or take us on at a game of croquet!

DAY 7

After breakfast we will venture to Ngare Ndare Forest with picnic lunches. Here you will walk along the elevated tree canopy walkway where you get a different perspective of the forest. Birdlife is plentiful and you may be lucky enough to spot migrating elephants. After this you will walk through the forest to our picnic spot for a hearty lunch. After lunch we will explore the many waterfalls within, ending with the source pool which is a magnificent blue surrounded by trees and vines. For those brave enough there are various waterfall jumps. We will return back to Olepangi Farm in time for sundowners and dinner in the Party House.

DAY 8

Today you can enjoy a lie in and a relaxed final breakfast before your onward journey. Depending on your flight time you are welcome to join us for an extra lunch and enjoy the farm until you leave.

For those who would like to stay on the farm longer, extra days are certainly an option. You could ride out along the boundary of Ole Naishu and enjoy a picnic lunch along the way. Or you could enjoy long walks along the river or just relax, read a book and soak up the joys of farm life. It’s up to you!
