Horse Riding Holidays Ireland – Hunting

Our range of Hunting Holidays in Ireland have been personally vetted by Zara and Jill. We are well placed to organise hunting holidays in Ireland because we are on the ground, have the connections and our very own office just outside of Dublin.

County Galway – 2 Hunts in one Weekend

This is a unique opportunity to hunt with the Roscommon and the Ormond hunts in one weekend. Stay in Portumna and ride with Oliver Walsh from Flowerhill. Itinerary & details below.

Co Roscommon hunt country is mostly nice dry stone walls with good ground. They hunt every Sunday and some Wednesdays. The hunt club meets at 12 noon and normally finishes at 4 pm – and afterwards there are drinks and sandwiches in the pub for a good get together. Oliver is the ‘Huntsman’ of Roscommon and he keeps the hounds on site at Flowerhill – hence visitors can go out with him during ‘hound exercise’ on horse back the days before the hunt and should you want, you can give Oliver a hand with hounds ‘whipping in’ – a great way to get involved with the hunt and the running of the pack and such a unique experience. The Ormond hunt (Saturdays or Tuesdays) and have some walls and hedges and a few ditches.

Galway Blazers & North Tipperary

From Flowerhill, we can also arrange for you to hunt with the Galway Blazers & North Tipperary.

Scarteen, Co. Limerick, Dunhallow & Stonehall Harriers

The Dunraven is an institution as far as hunting in Ireland is concerned and Louis has been looking after hunting clients from all over the world for many years.

The hotel itself is absolutely beautiful, think oldy world, with antiques, but absolutely pristine with a great bar and restaurant. They even offer a valet service to polish your boots after a days hunting, ready for the next!

Includes a days hunting with hireling and 2 nights DB&B.

Irish Hunting Holidays : 2017 Dates

The hunting season in Ireland runs from October through to late February, early March.

All our horse riding holidays hold a price guarantee. We believe in your piece of mind on price when you book one of our horse riding holidays and will refund the difference should you find the same horse riding holiday elsewhere at a lower price.

Depending on how much time you have, how much you want to spend, if it’s for yourself or a group and how “horse fit” you are, we can put together a personalised itinerary from a taster one day hunt to a full week experiencing some of the best hunting in Ireland.

We are the only riding company to have an office based in Ireland and we know the Irish Hunting Community well.  We are delighted to discuss your hunting requirements, experience etc and advise you on each hunt, the type of territory, match you up with a suitable hireling and co-ordinate all the ground arrangements.

From the famous ‘Meath Hunt’ where you’ll be hunting in big ditch country to the equally coveted ‘Kildare Hunt’ which hunts in upright fence country, you’ll find fox hunting in Ireland quite an experience. We can even on a tailored basis organise hunting to “invite only” hunts such as the Ward Union. In addition and highly recommended are the drag and mock hunts run by the ‘South County Dublin Harriers and North Kildare Farmers’ – here you are not hunting animals but for pure fast and exhilarating sports horse riding in Ireland you can’t beat it (some days North Kildare Farmers cover over 200 jumps in two hours!).

There is something very unique about hunting in Ireland, Eve Jones of Tatler sums it up perfectly;

“They turn up to hunt, not to be seen to be hunting. There is humour and honesty in it. There are no fakers. Fakers don’t wear one welly and one riding boot, tie their hat on their heads and leap into the unknown.”

We work with a number of different hunt yards, which we know well, including the O’Neills, the Walshs and the Leahys. Between them they cover the Meaths, Kildares, Roscommon, Ormond and Galway Blazers amongst others.

Horses – Experienced Irish Hunters, all from reputable hunt yards or hunt members themselves.

Level of Riding & Pace – Intermediate to Advanced.
You have to be very secure in your seat, and be able to jump cross country. A good level of fitness is required to enjoy a days hunting.

Please Ask About

  • We also offer golf, clay pigeon shooting, archery and many other activities in Ireland so please ask for a tailor-made itinerary.

Generally, fox hunting kicks off around 11.30am and will finish at sunset. You’ll definitely experience some long gallops and jump lots of ditches or fences depending on which hunt you join. Mock and drag hunts are shorter (generally two hours) but fast, furious and full-on, often covering many dozens of fences/jumps in the two hours. This is sport riding at its best.
